Catching up with former area athletes: Alex Kocer named Big 12 wrestler of the week

South Dakota State University wrestler Alex Kocer was named the Big 12 Conference's wrestler of the week on Wednesday after winning two matches against league foes.

Kocer, competing at 149 pounds, won by a 20-2 technical fall against West Virginia's Zachary Moore on Friday and defeated Oklahoma's Davion Jeffries with a 9-5 decision on Saturday.

Kocer is the first Jackrabbit wrestler to earn a Big 12 Conference weekly award since the school joined the conference this season.

The Wagner native has an overall record of 21-8 this season for SDSU, which will finish its dual season against North Dakota State University on Sunday in Fargo, North Dakota.

USF's Malloy helps Cougars into NSIC tournament

Senior guard Marie Malloy, a native of Parkston, has helped the University of Sioux Falls women's basketball team to a 21-5 record, with just two games left of the regular season.

To date, Malloy has played in all 26 games and is averaging 3.5 points, two rebounds and two assists per game. Malloy's highest scoring game came on two occasions, scoring eight points in contests against Southwest Minnesota State on Nov. 24 and on Jan. 16 against Northern State. USF recently dropped out of the latest polls after a 64-54 loss to in-state rival Augustana University. The Cougars have two regular season games left before the NSIC tournament on Feb. 24 in Sioux Falls.

Malloy and the Cougars visit Minnesota State-Mankato Friday in Mankato, Minnesota.

Schmidt opens sophomore campaign for Vikings

Mitchell native and Augustana University sprinter Emma Schmidt recently completed in the SDSU Indoor Classic on Feb. 12-13 in Brookings.

The sophomore placed 26th in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:43.79. Schmidt also helped the Viking 4x400 relay team take home a 17th-place finish with a time of 4:08.07. Earlier in the year, Schmidt competed in the Ted Nelson Classic on Feb. 6 in Mankato, Minnesota and took home a fifth-place finish in the 600-meter dash with a time of 1:42.67.

Schmidt and the Vikings compete in the SDSU Tune-Up on Saturday in Brookings.

Howard native picking up wins on the mat

Augustana University wrestler Bailey Neises, a native of Howard, recently picked up a first-place finish on Feb. 2 in the Sioux City Open, defeating Seth Ehlang of Dickinson State (N.D.) by the final of 7-4.

As a freshman, Neises currently holds a 17-3 record as a freshman for the Vikings. Earlier this season, Neises finished in fifth place on Jan. 30 in the North Country Open, defeating Bryce Zdanovec of Augsburg College (Minn.) by pinfall.

Neises and the Vikings clash with St. Cloud State (Minn.) on Friday in their final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual of the season in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
