Former Mitchell Kernel Seth Cavanaugh, a true freshman on the Dakota State University men’s basketball team, scored a career-high 12 points in an 85-73 loss against No. 19 Bellevue Saturday at the DWU Fulton State Bank Classic at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
Cavanaugh was 5-of-10 from the field and added five rebounds. Dakota State (3-1), which is ranked 18th overall in the NAIA, faces off against Northern State University Friday at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.

Black Hills State University senior cross country runner Mitch Kraft became the first athlete in Black Hills State University history to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships after finishing 19th overall at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships Saturday in Canyon, Texas.
Kraft, a Wessington Springs native, was the first individual runner who was not part of a qualifying team to cross the finish line, earning him a national berth.
Kraft will now compete at the NCAA Division II National Cross Country Championships on Nov. 23 in Spokane, Wash.
- Mount Marty men’s basketball junior Tyler Payer scored 18 points in the Lancers’ 66-60 loss to Johnson & Wales University in a nonconference matchup in Yankton.

Payer, an Armour High School graduate, added five rebounds and five assists and leads the Lancers in points per game with 19.
Mount Marty (0-2) hosts York College (Neb.) Tuesday in another nonconference game.
- Thad Campbell, a junior defensive back for the University of Sioux Falls, recorded six tackles in the Cougars’ 52-17 loss to No. 1 Minnesota State Saturday in the last home game of the season for USF. Campbell, a Platte native, is third on the team in sacks with 62 overall with just one game left in the season.
USF (5-5, 5-5 NSIC) travels to Wayne, Neb., for its final game of the season against Wayne State University.
- Former Parkston standout runner Alex Muntefering helped the Colorado State University men’s cross country team to a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference Championships Nov. 1 in Colorado Springs.
Muntefering is in his last year of eligibility with the rams and finished 14th overall in the race with a time of 24 minutes, 39.57 seconds. The finish earned him all-Mountain West second-team honors.
The second-place finish is the highest for the Colorado State men since 2005. The Rams run again Friday at the NCAA Mountain Regional in Ogden, Utah.
- Mitchell native and South Dakota State freshman Megan Farnham appeared in all four sets in the Jackrabbits’ 3-1 win over Omaha Friday in Brookings.

Farnham had a career-high nine digs in the victory, putting her at a total of 23 for the season.
SDSU (5-20, 3-9 Summit) travels to Indiana this weekend for its final two matches of the season against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
