Catching up: Havlik wins title at Cowboy Open

University of Wyoming redshirt freshman Brent Havlik, a Mitchell native, placed first in the 174-pound weight class in the Cowboy Open Saturday.

It was Wyoming’s first event of the season and Havlik was one of six Cowboy wrestlers to finish first. He went 5-0 defeating opponents from Northern Colorado, Air Force and Montana State.

Wyoming heads to the Northwest Open Saturday in Powell, Wyo.

- Former Wagner standout Solomon St. Pierre caught his first interception of the season for the University of Sioux Falls football team in a 30-28 loss to Upper Iowa University Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.

St. Pierre, a sophomore, returned the interception for 24 yards and recorded 10 tackles for the Cougars.

USF (5-4, 5-4 NSIC) hosts Minnesota State University Saturday in its final home game of the season at Bob Young Stadium in Sioux Falls.

- Robert Kokesh, a junior wrestler for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, opened the season with an individual tournament title in Nebraska’s season opener at Frost Arena in Brookings.

Kokesh, a Wagner native, tore through the 174-pound bracket with two pins, one technical fall and two major decisions.

Nebraska hosts its first event of the season Nov. 17 when Big Ten foe Northwestern comes to town.

- Mount Vernon graduate Kelsey Schmidt scored 13 points for the Mount Marty Lancers in a 107-31 victory over Grace University Nov. 1 in Yankton.

Schmidt, a junior, was 3-4 from three-point range in the win and added two rebounds and two steals in Mount Marty’s first game of the season.

Mount Marty (1-0) travels to St. Mary’s (Neb.) today for a nonconference matchup.

- Drew Kraft finished 14th overall at the Summit League Cross Country Championships Saturday in Fort Wayne, Ind.

He helped lead the South Dakota State University Jackrabbits cross country team to a first-place finish. Kraft, a Wessington Springs native, finished the men’s 8K in 25 minutes, 36.35 seconds.

The Jacks have a week off to prepare for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 15 in Ames, Iowa.
