Canton wins showdown of elite Class B wrestling teams at MCM Invitational

19 teams were in competition Friday to close out 2021

SALEM, S.D. — In the season’s first showdown of the top wrestling teams in Class B, the four-time defending state champions from Canton rose to the top once again.

Powered by four individual champions and 11 place winners, Canton won the McCook Central/Montrose Invitational Friday, scoring 211 points, holding off a field of the top-eight ranked teams in Class B, including second-place Winner Area at 175.5 points and Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes and Redfield tying for third with 161 points in the 19-team event.

For Canton, Ayson Rice (126), Andy Meyer (138), Luke Richardson (152), Marshall Baldwin (220) each won bracket titles to carry the C-Hawks to a team title.

For Winner Area, Kaden Keiser continued a dominant start to his season at 145 pounds, winning by technical fall in the championship match by a score of 23-8 over MCM’s Jackson Remmers. The matchup was a meeting of the Class B state champions from 132 (Remmers) and 145 (Keiser) last season.

The Warriors’ Riley Orel was the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler, winning the 160-pound title with a 3-0 decision over KWLPG’s Grayson Hanson. Orel has a record of 14-0. Maxton Brozik won the bracket at 113 pounds for the Warriors, improving to 13-0 and edging Trystan Traupel, of MCM.


KWLPG’s Kasen Konstanz won the 120-pound title with a 3-0 win over Howard’s Tate Miller, improving to 16-0 on the season. Levi Nightengale earned a second-period pin over Burke/Gregory’s Taron Serr for the title at 195 pounds for Nightengale’s 13th straight win to open the season.

Burke/Gregory’s Owen Hansen won the 132-pound title with a first-period pin to move to 17-0 on the season. Hansen had four pins on the day. In a battle of previously undefeated wrestlers, Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington’s Quinten Christensen won the 285-pound title over Redfield’s Grady Fey with a third-period pin. Christensen climbs to 7-0 on the season, while Fey is now 9-1. Fey had the day’s fastest pin, recording a fall in 11 seconds in his quarterfinal match.

Other event champions were at 106 pounds, with Redfield’s Brady Risetter continuing his undefeated season with a 2-1 decision over KWLPG’s Gavin Braun. Burk Blasius, now 8-0, won at 170 pounds for Philip Area, while Corbin Schwartz won at 182 for Redfield. Schwartz’s win came over previously undefeated Isaac Crownover, of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon, by 6-4 decision.

MVP had three second-place finishes, all finishing runner-up to Canton wrestlers. Hadley Tobin finished second at 126 pounds, Griffin Tobin was second at 152 and Cole Pranger took second at 220.

The top-eight ranked teams in Class B were all in attendance, including No. 1 Canton, No. 2 Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes, No. 3 Winner, No. 4 Redfield, No. 5 Philip, No. 6 MCM, No. 7 Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney and No. 8 Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon.

In girls competition, BHSA's Britney Rueb and Peyton Hellmann each won their three-person, round-robin divisions, with both wrestlers winning twice by fall. Hellmann improved to 11-1 on the season, while Rueb is now 7-1.
