WEBSTER -- Tate Miller hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning to send Canova past Parker, 5-4, in the first round on Friday of the South Dakota VFW Class B 14-and-under state tournament.
Carson Hinker hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game for Canova prior to Miller’s game-winning hit. Miller finished 2-for-4 and Weston Remmers added a pair of hits, as each had a double. Canova out-hit Parker, 8-4. On the mound, Kade Shumaker earned the win by tossing a scoreless inning in relief.
Gabe Gillespie took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) in 2.2 innings. Levi Berens paced Parker at the plate with a double. Seth VanVliet drove in two runs.
Gregory 14, MVP 0
WEBSTER -- Gregory used a seven-run fifth inning to top Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Friday in the first round of the SD VFW Class B 14U state tournament.
Gregory finished with nine hits in the win. Rylan Peck went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and triple, as he finished with three RBIs. Sawyer Tiegen added two hits and two RBIs, while Trey Murray recorded two hits, including a triple. On the mound, Gannon Thomas earned the win, tossing three shutout innings and fanning three batters.
