The South Dakota Class A state baseball tournament will be held July 16-18 in Mitchell at the Cadwell Sports Complex.

The tournament features players ages 9-12 and the first games will start at noon on Friday.

There are over 50 teams competing in this under-12 age group tournament, including six from Mitchell. The Mitchell Mad Dogs are fielding teams in each age group, while the Mitchell Titans are in the 10U division and the Mitchell Sliders are in the 12U pools.

Any Class A organization can register a team for a fee of $275. Each team must be sponsored by the local community baseball association within South Dakota and all players must meet the eligibility criteria, meaning their age must fall into the appropriate range by January 1 of the current year.

On Friday and Saturday, the tournament will be arranged in pool play for all four divisions. On Sunday, championship play will take place for all age groups. The games are six innings and limited to two hours for each time slot. Teams in each division are guaranteed to play at least three games.

In the 9-and-under division, the top seed from Pool 1 and 2 will advance to Sunday. In 9-and-under, two wild card teams will also advance to Sunday. The two teams with the best records outside of the top seed, will be considered the wild card teams. If two teams are tied with the same record, the team that has given up the least amount of runs will get the nod.

In the 10-and-under division, the top seed from Pool 1-3 and one wild card team will advance to Sunday.

In the 11-and-under and 12-and-under divisions, the top seed of Pool 1 and 2 will advance to Sunday championship play while the top two seeds from Pool 3 will advance. Pool 1 and 2 consist of four teams each while Pool 3 has seven teams each.

The champions and runner-up for each division will receive a trophy and individual award.

Last year, due to COVID-19, the tournament was hosted in separate locations. The 9-and-under division was in Harrisburg, the 11-and-under was in Brandon, and the 10-and-under and 12-and-under division was in Sioux Falls.

Chad Barman, South Dakota Class A Baseball Administrator, is excited the tournament is back in Mitchell because everything can fit at one location again.

"Their facilities are really nice," Barman said. "They have a large complex, with eight fields and everything is lit up. Mitchell puts on a good experience for everybody and that’s why it continues to get hosted there."

Mitchell will be hosting the tournament for their fifth time in the last eight years.

The last time a Mitchell team won this tournament was 2016 in the 12U division. The Mitchell Mustangs went 3-0 in pool play, beat Brookings in the semifinals 11-7 and went on to defeat Brandon Valley Black in the championship 6-5.

Tickets at the gate will be $5 per person each day.
