Brookings defeats Marlin girls twice

BROOKINGS--The Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team's winning streak ended at seven over the weekend, as the Brookings Rangers swept a series at the Larson Ice Center. Brookings won 4-2 on Saturday and 5-2 on Sunday.

BROOKINGS-The Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team's winning streak ended at seven over the weekend, as the Brookings Rangers swept a series at the Larson Ice Center. Brookings won 4-2 on Saturday and 5-2 on Sunday.

In the opener, Mitchell fell behind 2-0 before Jenna Grosdidier and Ashley Jones each scored to even the game at 2-2. The Rangers added a goal late in the second period and an insurance goal in the third for the win. Kelsey Amick assisted on both goals for Mitchell and Katelyn Uithoven made 31 saves, while the Marlins were outshot 35-29.

On Sunday, the game was tied 2-2 after two periods before Brookings scored three times in a two-minute span in the third period. Maggie Dailey had the first goal of the game, with Amick netting a goal in the second period. Jones assisted on both scores and Uithoven had 23 saves in the loss. The Marlins were 0-for-5 on the power play and finished even in shots on goal with Brookings at 28 apiece.

Mitchell (7-3-1) hosts Sioux Falls at 8 p.m. Friday at the Mitchell Activities Center, the first of three games next weekend.
