SCOTLAND -- It's an understatement to say the Bon Homme High School track and field teams are having successful seasons this year.
In the eight meets Bon Homme has participated in this season, the boys' team has picked up three first-place finishes and four second-place finishes. The girls' team has picked up four wins, one second-place finish and two third-place finishes. The only meet where the two teams have not placed was at the Dan Lennon Invitational, where team scores were not recorded.
"Having a lot of depth has really helped us this season," head coach Byron Pudwill said. "We've got a little bit of everything."
On Tuesday at the Little Missouri Valley Conference meet in Scotland, the Bon Homme girls' track team took first place in the team results and dominated the running events, winning six out of 11 events. For full results, see Page B2.
Eighth-grader Anna Heusinkveld set a record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.45 seconds, breaking the previous record set in 1978. Heusinkveld also won the 200 with a time of 27.42 seconds. Morgan Rothschadl won the 400 with a time of 1:03.45, Caitlin McLouth won the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.83, and the 800-meter relay team also grabbed a first-place finish with a time of 1:56.38.

The boys' team also took first place at Tuesday's meet. Nathan Bares picked up three wins for the boys. He won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.32 seconds, the 200 with a time of 23.26 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 43.40.
Tuesday, also marked the 48th track and field conference or region championship that Bon Homme has won since 1990.
Pudwill said he has been surprised with the teams' accomplishments. He knew there was going to be some standout athletes this year, but he wasn't expecting both teams would be as successful this year.
"We're happy with our success," Pudwill said. "There were some athletes that we knew were going to have success, but it's perhaps been more than we were originally thinking. The kids work hard."
Pudwill said there's no real secret to success other than getting the kids out on the track to practice and get better. He said he's unsure about how the teams will perform at the state track meet later this month, but he knows that individual athletes will be able to do well.
"The weather has been great this year, so everybody's in a good mood so that really helps," he said. "The sun always shines in Bon Homme."
