The fourth quarter was closing time for the Jamestown University women’s basketball team.

Dakota Wesleyan University trailed by two points with 6 1/2 minutes left, but the Jimmies went on a 8-0 surge and it was enough to pick up a 75-69 win Wednesday at the Corn Palace.

“They went on an 8-0 run is what they did,” DWU coach Jason Christensen said. “We came out and we played a zone. They had two shooters on the floor and two veteran players decided to leave them. Boom, there was one three and we came down and turned it over twice after that, and next thing you know it’s an eight-point game.”

The Tigers (14-10, 12-10) will play at Concordia University in the Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday in Seward, Nebraska.

On Saturday, Matti Reiner paced the Tigers with 21 points and nine rebounds. Jada Campbell added 12 points and six boards.

Jamestown’s Kia Tower tossed in a 23 points and hit 3-pointers. The Jimmies, who average seven made 3-pointers a game, finished 10 of 22 from beyond the arc.

“They haven’t shot the ball well all year,” Christensen said. “They have not been a very good 3-point shooting team and of course they come in here and light it up.”

Tower’s banked in a half-court shot to beat the third-quarter buzzer, giving Jamestown a 52-47 advantage. The Tigers stayed within striking distance early in the final frame, but Jamestown pulled away and closed it out at the free-throw line.

In the first quarter, DWU shot 4 of 14 from the field for 28.6% shooting from the field. Christensen called a timeout 33 seconds into the game after the Tigers blew a defensive assignment and had an early turnover.

“We just weren’t ready to play,” Christensen said. “I mean, that was a perfect example. I call a timeout 30 seconds into the game and I could tell my kids weren’t ready to play.”
