The Corn Palace will again be the epicenter for high school basketball this weekend.

The Dakota Wesleyan University Culver’s Classic is today and Saturday at the Corn Palace, with 15 total girls and boys games at the venue.

The six-game girls event starts at 1 p.m. today and continues until 8:30 p.m. The nine-game boys slated starts at 9 a.m. Saturday and concludes at 9 p.m.

State semifinal rematch highlights girls lineup

De Smet won last year’s Class B state championship and it edged Corsica-Stickney by two points in the state semifinal thriller.

The Bulldogs (14-3) and Jaguars (18-0) will clash again at 8:30 p.m. today in the final contest of the girls classic.

The No. 1 Jaguars (18-0) are the last undefeated Class B girls team and are powered by all-stater Avery Broughton. The freshman is averaging 20 points and nine rebounds per game. Broughton, who already has 1,000 career points, has logged seven double-doubles this season.

Sophomore Rachel Gerlach (11 ppg) and junior Raven Barse (10.1 ppg/8.1 rpg) complement Broughton to give Corsica-Stickney a formidable trio. Barse has a 16-point, 17-rebound double-double to her credit this season.

No. 3 De Smet has dropped games against quality opponents Hamlin (45-37), Castlewood (48-42) and Flandreau (46-37). Senior Autumn Wilkinson recently scored her 1,000th career point.

Top-five matchups headline boys slate

The top-five teams in Class B boys basketball and two top-five matchups highlight the boys action.

No. 1 St. Thomas More (14-0) and No. 4 Sioux Falls Christian (12-3) will play at 1:30 p.m. in a Class A top-five matchup. The Cavaliers, who are the last undefeated team in Class A boys, recently defeated Class AA Sioux Falls O’Gorman (62-58).

The top-five teams in Class B will then scatter the lineup. No. 4 White River (13-2) plays Corsica-Stickney (10-3) at 3 p.m., while No. 5 Dell Rapids St. Mary (12-2) plays Hanson (13-3) at 4:30 p.m. No. 2 Viborg-Hurley (14-2) faces No. No. 3 Aberdeen Christian (15-2) at 7:30 p.m. No. 1 De Smet (14-1) plays Canistota (13-3) at 9 p.m. to complete the day.

The Dell Rapids St. Mary vs. Hanson matchup holds major Region 4B implications. Hanson is currently No. 1 in the region, while Dell Rapids St. Mary is No. 2.

It also features a pair of high-scoring guards. The Cardinals are led by all-state guard Connor Libis, who entered Thursday’s game against Arlington with 1,961 career points. The junior guard is averaging 25.1 points and has one 40-point game this season. He also has 259 career 3-pointers.

Hanson senior guard Reggie Slaba recently pumped in a school-record 47 points and hit eight 3-pointers in an 81-66 win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton.
