YANKTON -- A scoreless drought during the waning moments of the first half proved costly for the No. 10 Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team.

An 8-0 run put the Tigers ahead 31-26, but No. 18 Mount Marty scored eight points of the final 11 points of the half, forcing DWU to play catchup for the remainder of a 72-61 Great Plains Athletic Conference loss on Wednesday. The win marked the first time the Tigers have been swept by Mount Marty since 2004-2005.

Trailing 42-40 early in the second half, DWU (19-7, 11-6 GPAC) missed four consecutive jumpers and the Lancers built a 50-42 lead. And while the Tigers kept within striking distance for the remainder of the game, they never pulled closer than six.

Mason Larson canned a 3-pointer to trim the Mount Marty (19-8, 10-7) advantage to 63-57 with 2 minutes, 58 seconds to play, but Colby Johnson answered with a triple of his own to push the lead back to nine. Back-to-back 3-point attempts did not fall, sealing DWU’s fate.

Ty Hoglund scored a game-high 23 points on 9 of 19 shooting and grabbed six rebounds. Samuel McCloud had 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the 3-point line, while also adding seven rebounds and four assists. Koln Oppold and Larson had nine points apiece for the Tigers, who committed 18 turnovers.

Johnson led Mount Marty with 21 points, while Ryan Warren had 17 points and seven steals. Saba Gvedashvili and Jailen Billings chipped in 12 points apiece.

DWU returns to the court against Doane at 4 p.m. on Saturday in Crete, Nebraska.
