JOLIET, Ill. -- The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team stay perfect on the season with a pair of wins at the St. Francis Thanksgiving Classic.
The No. 6 Tigers picked up wins over Lincoln College (74-70) and St. Francis (80-71) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. DWU is now 8-0 on the season.
On Sunday, built a double-digit lead and needed to hold off the host team for the win. The Tigers took a 17-point lead with 12:50 to play. But the Fighting Saints chopped the deficit to eight points with 9:18 left. DWU’s Mason Larson converted four straight free throws to stretch the margin to 67-57 and his 3-pointer made it 70-57 at the 6:56 mark.
The Tigers closed things out from there. DWU, which never trailed, received 20 points and five assists from Ty Hoglund. Nick Harden added 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Tyson Smiley tallied 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Larson finished with nine points.
The Tigers nailed 11 3-pointers and outrebounded the Fighting Saints, 34-29
On Saturday, the Tigers held a slim 31-29 lead at halftime and needed to hold off the Lynx for the win. Lincoln held a 66-64 lead for two and a half minutes of game time until Tristan Teichmeier made a pair of free throws to tie the game.
With a minute to play and the score tied at 70, Collin Kramer drove to the basket and made a layup to give the Tigers a slight advantage. The Lynx could not tie the game on their next possession, as they fouled Hoglund who made both free throws to ice the game and give DWU the victory.
Hoglund led the team with 23 points and nine rebounds, while McCloud shot 6-of-11 from beyond the arc to finish with 18 points. Harden tallied 17 points and four assists, while Kramer added 10 rebounds and seven points. The Tigers shot 47.5 percent from the field, while tallying 39 rebounds.
The Tigers return home to host in-state rival, (RV) Mount Marty College at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Corn Palace.
