Top-seeded and unbeaten West Central punched its ticket to the Class A state tournament on Thursday at the Corn Palace, but it took a putback layup in the final 30 seconds to escape an upset from No. 16 Crow Creek, 44-41.
Megan Madsen hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession of the second half to extend the West Central lead to 10 points. The Trojans could never pull away, however, as Crow Creek slowly whittled away the lead and finally got within two points on a pair of free throws from Marveen Ross with 50 seconds to play.
The Chieftains were not able to haul in a an errant layup, though, and Madsen was eventually able to lay it in to help secure the win.
Madsen was the lone West Central (22-0) player in double figures with 10 points.
Sarah Hunter led Crow Creek with a game-high 22 points. The Chieftains finish the season 13-9.
