In its second game in three nights, the Mitchell Christian girls basketball team hosted Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Thursday and fatigue set in early.

The Blackhawks blitzed the Golden Eagles in the first quarter, outscoring them 20-4 in the frame, en route to a 57-24 win.

Not only did Mitchell Christian (7-10) struggle to find its legs, according to head coach Chris Nemec, but it also could not find a way to crack the SCW (14-6) press.

"The pressed us early on and we struggled to break it," Nemec said. "They have a lot of really good athletes and their height, size and physicality bothered us early on. It just kind of set the tone for the game."

The Golden Eagles mustered 10 points by halftime and then had an 11-9 advantage in the third quarter, but the damage had already been done by that point in the game.

Megan Poyer led the Blackhawk attack, connecting on four field goals for nine of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter, making it difficult for the Mitchell Christian defense to execute its game plan.

"We weren't doing a good job of closing out on her," Nemec said. "Before the game, we talked about taking away her right hand and we needed to make sure she was boxed out. We weren't doing any of those things very well. When she got into the lane, she was just too strong for us."

Staci Wolbrink led Mitchell Christian with seven points and Audrey Hofer added six. The Golden Eagles play Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Saturday in Plankinton to close out the regular season.
