Balanced scoring aids Blackhawks in win over Golden Eagles
When the Mitchell Christian boys basketball team hosted Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Thursday, it pitted two of the top scorers in Class B. One of them won in the scorebook, while the other won on the scoreboard.
Alec Nelson poured in a game-high 38 points for the Golden Eagles, while Noah Dickson had a team-high 28 for the Blackhawks, but it was SCW that came out on top, 58-43.
"Noah is a really nice player and we wanted to take him away—and we did," MCS head coach Jesse Tolsma said. "Where we struggled was on the offensive glass. We gave up probably half of his points on second chance opportunities. He does a great job of going to the offensive glass and we wanted to make him play from the perimeter, but he played well tonight."
Mitchell Christian (8-9) held a four-point lead after the first quarter after holding Dickson to a pair of free throws. In the second, SCW (14-6) had an 18-7 advantage to take a halftime lead, thanks to 13 points from the junior forward.
The Blackhawks also had others jump into the fray, as Tater Moody had 12 points, while Trey Ulmer and Cayden Slykhuis added eight apiece.
Meanwhile for the Golden Eagles, Alec Nelson scored at will, shooting 12 of 26 from the field and 12-for-13 from the free-throw line, while making six steals. The rest of the team couldn't find its shooting touch, however, as they combined to go 2 of 15 for five points.
"(Nelson) did a great job of being aggressive, but it's getting the other kids the confidence to step up as those opportunities present themselves," Tolsma said. "Tonight, those opportunities we there, we just didn't capitalize on them. We know going forward that we need a balanced attack and to spread the ball around."
Mitchell Christian returns to the court Saturday against Mount Vernon/Plankinton in Plankinton. SCW plays Wessington Springs on Feb. 22 in Forestburg
