SEWARD, Neb.-The second-half scoring exploded and the Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team held on Saturday for a road victory at Concordia (Neb.) University, 68-63, at Walz Arena in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

The win was a pivotal one in the Tigers' bid for the postseason, improving to 19-8 overall and 12-7 in conference play. DWU stands fourth in the GPAC standings, a game behind third-place Briar Cliff (13-6 GPAC) and 1 1/2 games ahead of fifth-place teams Dordt and Northwestern (each 10-8).

DWU held a 29-16 halftime lead, thanks to a 13-0 run to close the first half over the final 5-and-a-half minutes, and a defensive effort to hold Concordia to 24 percent shooting in the first half.

In the second half, the Tigers picked up where they left off, stretching the lead to as many 20 points, aided by a pair of 3-pointers from Collin Kramer and freshman Mason Larson.

The Bulldogs, who shot 53 percent after halftime, whittled the lead down to five points with 37 seconds left, but free throws from Aaron Ahmadu and Ty Hoglund in the final moments helped to seal the game.

The way the Tigers won the game was out of character, however. The scoring output was DWU's second-lowest total of the season, and the Tigers made 20 field goals in the game, the fewest for DWU in any game this season.

Hoglund finished the game with a game-high 28 points and six rebounds, along with an 11-for-14 shooting performance at the free-throw line. Larson-starting for the first time in place of Nick Harden, who did not play Saturday-posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in 36 minutes. Kramer had 14 points and four assists, while Aaron Ahmadu had 12 points and five assists. DWU was 19-for-25 at the free-throw line in the win.

Brevin Sloup had 11 points for the Bulldogs (14-15, 6-13 GPAC) in the loss.

The Tigers play at Valley City State (N.D.) at 8 p.m. Wednesday to close regular season nonconference play.
