Losing streak snapped: Kernel boys ride tough defense to first win of season

SPEARFISH -- The Mitchell High School boys basketball team put together a complete performance against Spearfish on Saturday, earning its first win of the season, 72-36.

“I’m happy for the kids to get a lead, stretch that lead and finish it off,” Mitchell coach Todd Neuendorf said. “I thought we played 32 minutes of really solid basketball.”

After falling behind 13-11 after the first quarter, the Kernels’ (1-12) defense clamped down, putting a focus on taking away Spearfish’s strong hand. It led to a few charges, as well as 18 takeaways and holding the Spartans (1-13) to 27.5 percent shooting, including just 20 percent in a 16-point second half.

“We called a timeout in the first quarter and got after the guys a little bit,” Neuendorf said. “They cranked it up and responded. And from that point on, kind of took (Spearfish) out of what they wanted to do.”

Meanwhile, Mitchell took control of the paint on the offensive end. They fed Caden Hinker down low, with him finishing with a team-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Carter Jacobsen also added 17 points, helping the Kernels take a 34-20 halftime lead, which grew to 57-28 at the end of the third.

“We got it inside and they couldn’t handle Hinker inside,” Neuendorf said. “Hinker got some stuff done. He passed out of the post and we hit some shots out of the post.”

The Kernels shot 49.1 percent from the field and won the rebounding battle 37-25. Derek Factor was a big reason why. He had a productive game running the offense, recording a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double.

Ryley Johansen also pulled down eight boards for the Kernels. Kevin Kolb added a team-high 11 points for the Spartans.

Mitchell travels to Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 7 p.m. Thursday.
