The Mitchell High School girls basketball team arrived focused on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

It showed, as the Kernels wreaked havoc on defense, made open shots on offense and took down Spearfish 64-39 for their third straight win.

“I thought our kids were focused today,” Mitchell coach Wes Morgan said. “I was concerned that we wouldn’t come out ready to play and overlook a team.”

The Kernels (8-6) used small runs throughout the first half to build a 30-18 lead at halftime, but the 12-point lead quickly blossomed.

Spearfish’s (1-14) inability to break Mitchell’s press sparked a 16-0 run for the Kernels to open the second half. By the end of the eight-minute frame, Mitchell’s constant defensive pressure in the backcourt and willingness to attack the basket on offense led to a 26-6 advantage over the Spartans to take a 56-24 lead.

“I thought they got some layups on us early,” Morgan said, adding he felt his team tired the Spartans in the first half. “But I think over the long haul of the game, we took advantage.”

The Kernels finished with 16 takeaways, including four steals from Tayler Factor, and held the Spartans to 36 percent shooting.

However, offensively, the big quarter was highlighted by Tess Limberg and Tayler Factor combining for 11 of those points. Limberg finished with a team-high 16 points, while Factor added 14 as they helped Mitchell shoot 50 percent in the game and 56.5 percent in the second half.

Jordyn Cranny and Mandy Schmidt both hit a 3-pointer, too. The Kernels finished 4-for-13 from beyond the arc, in part due to strong passes from the post rather than side-to-side passes. Cranny finished with a team-high six assists, while Payton Morgan and Factor both dished out three.

“We talked about (outside shooting) at halftime (Friday) and again (Saturday),” coach Morgan said. “I said, ‘You guys put all this work in it. You guys are good shooters.’ ”

Despite Mitchell making four 3s, it did most of its damage in the post. The Kernels’ drives to the basket were often matched with little pushback and an open look at the rim. Mackenzie Miller reaped the benefits en route to 13 points and seven rebounds.

With a 60-28 lead, Morgan was able to rest his starters for the final 5:23. Spearfish hit a trio of 3s in that time, but could only cause a little dent in the lead. The Spartans finished 4 of 8 from beyond the arc.

Cranny finished with six points for Mitchell. Stella Marcus and Cora Tobin had 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Spartans.

Mitchell hosts Harrisburg at 7 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace in conjunction with the DWU Culver’s Classic.
