BROOKINGS-When the Mitchell High School boys basketball team took the floor at Brookings on Thursday, it wanted to erase the 28-point performance at Watertown on Tuesday from their memories.

After scoring one point in the first quarter on Tuesday, the Kernels tallied two in the first frame against the Bobcats and eventually trailed by 14 in the third quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to the visitors, however, as they outscored Brookings 14-5 to force overtime.

Mitchell briefly took a lead on a 3-pointer by Caden Hinker in the extra period, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Trent Broksieck sank the Kernels in a 64-56 loss.

"I thought it was going to be our turn and we just can't get it to go," MHS head coach Todd Neuendorf said. "...We made plays to win the basketball game and we just couldn't make the last one."

Mitchell (0-11) battled back in the second quarter, but surrendered 20 points in third quarter, requiring another comeback in the fourth. The Kernels were able to lockdown Brookings in the fourth quarter, thanks to some strong play off the bench by senior Derek Factor.

Factor made two key layups late in the game and Carter Jacobsen capitalized on a 3-point play to tie the game, 48-48, with less than a minute to play. With 11.6 seconds, Factor tipped a Brookings inbound pass and it was snagged by Hinker to give Mitchell a crack at the last shot.

Neuendorf dialed up the same play that sent last year's game in Brookings to overtime, but this time it ended with a turnover.

"We'd probably run the exact same play if we had the opportunity," Neuendorf said. "Last year we got to the free-throw line with it, this year it didn't work out. It came down to that last play, but we dug our hole in that first quarter."

Brookings would outscore the Kernels 16-8 in overtime, as Drew Cole scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Broksieck finished with 19 points for the Bobcats.

Jacobsen led Mitchell with 17 points, while Hinker had 16 and Kiel Nelson pitched in seven points and 11 boards.
