The Corsica-Stickney girls basketball did it again.

Two weeks after topping No. 2 Warner at the Parkston Classic, the Jaguars took down No. 3 De Smet 56-40 at the Hanson Classic.

“Any time you play a ranked team, you want to see how you measure up and so it was a really nice test for us,” Corsica-Stickney coach Lorisa Broughton said.

The No. 4 Jaguars (9-0) used a balanced scoring attack to overcome a sluggish start and handed De Smet (8-1) its first loss of the season. Talented eighth-grader Avery Broughton paced the Jaguars with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Raven Barse added 14 points and collected a game-high 13 rebounds. Courtney Menning added 11 points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists.

Corsica-Stickney dished out 12 assists on 20 made field goals.

“We always talk about that,” coach Broughton said. “We share the ball and you are hard to stop when they don’t know who to stop.”

Once the Jaguars got on track, they were hard to stop. Corsica-Stickney was slow out of the gates and missed some easy shots at the rim.

“I think we just pushed through,” Menning said. “We came out and struggled. We never played here this year. So we just had to get used to it and after that I think we were fine.”

The Jaguars led 15-11 after the first quarter and 25-17 at halftime. Corsica-Stickney maintained its advantage in the second half. The Bulldogs, who were paced by Rynn Osthus’ 14 points, cut the deficit to 46-40 with 2:55 left. However, Rachel Gerlach converted a field goal and Broughton’s two free throws later stretched it back to a 10-point advantage.

The Jaguars closed it out from there.

Corsica-Stickney plays Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Tuesday at New Holland. De Smet plays Hamlin on Tuesday.
