Golden Eagle boys hold off AC/DC

NEW HOLLAND—The Mitchell Christian boys basketball team withstood a fourth-quarter rally from Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday.

The Golden Eagles built a 28-point lead in the second half, but the Thunder scored 31 points in the fourth quarter. However, Mitchell Christian fended off the rally for a 75-65 victory.

"I thought for about three and a half quarters we played well," Mitchell Christian coach Jesse Tolsma said. "We played really aggressive. We got complacent in the fourth quarter and didn't finish the game as strong as we would have liked."

The Golden Eagles also made a living at the free-throw line as they went 26 of 40.

"Obviously, we want to be an aggressive team," Tolsma said. "Any time you can get that many trips to the line obviously we want to make more of them."

Alec Nelson converted 8 of 10 at the foul line and finished with a team-high 26 points. He was one of four Mitchell Christian players in double figures. Joey Feiner (17), Ty Vander Pol (15) and Luke Knutson (14) also scored in double figures as Nelson was the primary focus of AC/DC's defense.

"Everybody did a good job stepping up and did a good job picking up that where they tried taking him away," Tolsma said.

AC/DC's Daaron Tronvold finished with 27 points, including 14 points in the fourth quarter surge.

"He's a nice player," Tolsma said. "At the end, we just didn't do a good job finishing. We did a really good job on him through three quarters, but at the end they got hot from the 3-point line and we didn't do a good job taking that away."

Parker Vander Pol finished with 14 points for AC/DC.

Mitchell Christian (4-5) hosts Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Jan. 17 at MCS gym.

AC/DC (2-5) hosts Corsica-Stickney on Jan. 15 in New Holland.
