The nation's newest No. 1 team will be playing at the Corn Palace on Friday.
There's a new set of USA TODAY Super 25 boys basketball rankings and La Lumiere (Ind.) checks in as the top-ranked team in the country. The Lakers will play Findlay Prep (Nev.) at 9:30 p.m. on Friday in the Hoop City Classic. La Lumiere is No. 2 in the latest MaxPreps top 25 rankings.
La Lumiere, which is powered by five-stars Isaiah Stewart and Keion Brooks, just won the Iolani Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Lakers catapulted their way to the top spot by knocking off then No. 1 Montverde (Fla.) Academy 58-51 in the semifinals of the classic and then Oak Ridge (Fla.) 72-58 to claim the tournament title.
Stewart paced the Lakers with 24 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks in the championship game and was named MVP of the classic.
Friday's contest between La Lumiere and Findlay Prep is a rematch of a 2011 game between the same teams at the Corn Palace. Findlay Prep, which was then the No. 1 in the country by MaxPreps, lost to La Lumiere 67-66 at the Corn Palace. La Lumiere was No. 10 in the nation at the time.
This year's meeting has received some national attention when MaxPreps tabbed it as one of the nation's top-25 high school basketball games this season.
"Two of the top basketball academies in the country battle in South Dakota in late December. Formerly known as the Mike Miller Classic, the Hoop City Classic features a number of strong matchups headlined by the Lakers vs. the Pilots," MaxPreps wrote last month.
Hoop City Classic participant Mountain Brook (Ala.) is also ranked in the latest USA TODAY Super 25 boys basketball rankings. The Spartans are No. 16 in the newest rankings, while they are No. 14 according to MaxPreps.
Mountain Brook recently defeated No. 2 IMG Academy on Dec. 20 at the City of Palms in Fort Myers, Florida. Mountain Brook five-star senior forward Trendon Watford posted 38 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Mountain Brook plays Lower Brule at 6:30 p.m. today at the Corn Palace.
