Kernel girls comeback bid falls short
RAPID CITY—The Mitchell High School girls basketball team almost completed a 20-point comeback, but fell to Rapid City Stevens 49-47 on Saturday.
The Kernels trailed 46-26 halfway through the third quarter and had three chances to tie or win the game, but came up empty on each possession.
The Kernels trailed 19-6 after the first quarter and 34-19 at halftime. The Raiders extended their lead to 20 points with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Kernels closed the frame with eight straight points and nine consecutive to start the fourth quarter.
Mitchell made it a two-point game with 3:30 left, but neither team scored a point the rest of the way. Stevens scored just three points in the final 10 minutes.
Tess Limberg led Mitchell with 11 points. Payton Morgan scored nine points and Mackenzie Miller added eight points. Kyah Watson finished with 26 points for Stevens.
Mitchell plays at Brandon Valley on Thursday.
