RAPID CITY -- The Mitchell 15/16 baseball team finished fourth in the 16-and-under Class A state baseball tournament that was held July 29 to Aug. 1.
Mitchell beat Brookings 10-7 on Thursday, defeated Harrisburg Maroon 11-10 in nine innings on Friday and recorded 16 hits in the 16-9 win over Sioux Falls East on Saturday to give them a perfect record in pool play.
In their first matchup in the championship bracket, Mitchell faced Renner. Renner scored nine runs in the top of the third inning, ultimately carrying Post 307 to the 11-0 win.
Peyton Mandel and Connor Singray each had one hit for Mitchell.
Lincoln Bates took the loss for Mitchell as he struck out four batters, but allowed 11 runs and eight hits. Colin Stange struck out one and allowed three hits in 2 ⅓ innings.
In Mitchell’s second game, they were playing for third place bragging rights as they took on Brandon Valley Lynx. Mitchell got off to a good start scoring three runs in the first inning. Brandon Valley responded and scored seven runs in the fourth, giving them an 8-5 advantage. Followed up with four runs in the sixth inning and this game was out of reach for Mitchell as Brandon Valley claimed third place with a 12-6 victory.
Gavin Soukup finished 3 of 4 with two RBIs. Carter Miller, Landon Wandell and Blake Brosz each had two hits while Lincoln Bates scored two runs.
Peyton Mandel stood at the mound 3 ⅔ innings for Mitchell. He struck out three batters, but allowed nine hits and eight runs. Hudson Haley allowed three runs in 1 ⅔ innings. Karter Sibson also pitched 1 ⅔ innings and allowed one run and one hit.
