Mitchell Junior Legion couldn’t manufacture enough offense in a 5-1 loss to Brookings during its regional tournament on Friday at Drake Field.
Brookings did all of its scoring in the third and fourth innings. Parker Winghart and Ashton Witte hit back-to-back RBI singles in the third inning to start the scoring. An inning later, Payton Theodosopoulos hit a bases-loaded double to clear the bases and give Brookings a five-run lead.
Mitchell was unable to make a comeback. Brandon Sparks singled home Mason Geraets with two outs in the fifth, but it didn’t cross the plate again. Lukas Bennett and Sparks hit back-to-back singles in the seventh, but Lincoln Hardin struck out the final two batters to end the game.
Hardin finished with five strikeouts over a complete game. He held Mitchell to six hits, as Sparks had the only two-hit day.
Ty Neugebauer threw 101 pitches over a complete game, holding Brookings to five runs (three earned) on nine hits and four walks. He struck out three batters.
