WINNER -- Alexandria built a 6-0 lead and held off Winner/Colome, 7-4, for a Sunshine League amateur baseball victory on Friday.
Alexandria’s Tyson Gau fanned eight batters, scattered nine hits and allowed one earned run in his complete-game performance. Offensively, Gau finished 1 of 4 and drove in a run.
Michael Schoettmer ignited Alexandria’s offense with a two-run homer in the second inning. In the third inning, Tyson Gau and Jordan Gau recorded back-to-back RBIs. Pierce Smith drove in Jordan Gau with an RBI single, while John Greicar scored on a wild pitch for a 6-0 advantage.
Alexandria chased Winner/Colome starter Derek Graesser after 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits, six earned runs and struck out two batters.
Connor Hopkins came in relief as the Pheasants chipped away at the deficit. Hopkins struck out nine batters, allowed three hits and one earned run in 6 2/3 innings.
Offensively, Reed Harter and Austin Richey each finished with two hits. Hopkins, Dillon Lambley and Zach Harter each drove in a run.
Alexandria (8-2, 6-1 Sunshine League) hosts Platte on Sunday. Winner/Colome (6-2, 4-2 Sunshine League) plays at Parkston on Sunday.
