Mitchell Junior Legion erased an early three-run deficit in the first game of a doubleheader against Brookings on Wednesday, guiding it to a Game 1 win and a split of the twin bill. Mitchell won the first game, 6-4, but then fell 18-7 in the second game.
Mitchell trailed 3-0 before scoring four runs in the fourth inning of the first game. Jackson Ebert hit a two-run double and Jack Vermeulen followed with a two-RBI single in the ensuing at-bat. After Brookings tied the game, Ebert scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, with Vermeulen adding an insurance run on an error in the next at-bat.
Mitchell finished with six hits and drew five walks. On the mound, Lukas Bennett earned the win, as he struck out four and held Brookings to an unearned run in 3.2 innings of relief. Seth Muth struck out a pair in a scoreless frame to pick up the save.
Lincoln Hardin took the loss, allowing four earned runs in a five-inning start for Brookings. Talon Richter doubled and went 2-for-4, while Justin Coffel also hit a double.
In Game 2, Mitchell stuck around in the high-scoring affair, but Brookings scored eight runs in the final three innings to pull away. Mitchell was held to one run after the second inning.
Brookings out-hit Mitchell, 13-8, with Ashton Witte, Parker Winghart and Ethan Molengraaf all having two hits. Molengraaf drove in four runs and Braden Clifford had three RBIs.
Sam Hardin picked up the win, allowing an unearned run over the final five innings.
For Mitchell, Dylan Soulek received the loss. He gave up seven runs (four earned) in a 1.1-inning start. Brock Sparks, Landon Waddell and Ebert all had two hits. Lukas Bennett drove in two runs.
Mitchell (9-4) opens the Sioux Falls tournament today.
