SALEM -- The Alexandria Angels only needed eight innings to start the season with a win. An eight-run eighth inning handed Alexandria an 11-0 win over Salem on Thursday.
The Angels drew six walks and recorded three hits in the big inning, including Tyson Gau and Blake Klinkhammer each hitting an RBI single. Jed Schmidt doubled earlier in the inning, as Jordan Gau and Peyton Smith all hit a double in the win. Smith finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Schmidt also earned the win, striking out two in three relief innings. Ethan Davis fanned four batters in a three-inning start.
Corey Struck suffered the loss for Salem, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings. The Cubs were held to two hits.
Alexandria (1-0) hosts Canova on Tuesday. Salem (0-1) hosts Mount Vernon on Tuesday.
Mount Vernon 4, Vermillion 3
MOUNT VERNON -- Mount Vernon held on for an amatuer baseball win over Vermillion on Thursday, keeping it perfect on the season.
Eric Giblin went 2-for-3 and drove in a run for the Mustangs, who had eight hits. He also hit a solo shot in the second inning. Luke Tiesler doubled in the win, as well. On the mound, Briggs Havlik allowed two earned runs in a two-inning start, followed by Giblin giving up a run in 3.2 innings. Bradley Dean and Deric Denning tossed 3.1 shutout innings to finish the contest.
Vermillion finished with six hits.
Mount Vernon (5-0) travels to Salem on Tuesday.
