OMAHA, Neb.-Mitchell Post 18 dropped its final two games of the Omaha Westside Classic on Sunday. Post 18 lost to Pius X Union Bank 8-7 and Omaha Westside 18-11.
Against Pius, Mitchell allowed three runs in the top of the ninth inning as it couldn't keep a 5-3 advantage.
Brady Hawkins led Post 18 with three hits and two RBIs. Peyton Nash added two hits and one RBI. Koby Larson, Calvin Hegg, Max Schoenfelder, Jared Miller, Ryan McGinnis and Brady Brosz each had a hit. Larson, Nash, Schoenfelder, McGinnis and Isaac Rew each knocked in a run. Jackson Sadler took the loss. He lasted seven innings, allowing 10 hits and eight runs while striking out one and walking one.
Against Omaha Westside, Mitchell and the host team erupted for 16 runs (eight apiece) in the sixth inning. Hawkins led Mitchell's offense with four RBIs on three hits. He cracked a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Schoenfelder finished with two hits, while Hegg and Nash each had a hit. Larson, Sadler, Hegg, Jared Miller and Joe VanOverschelde each drove in a run.
Larson took the loss. He allowed four hits and six earned runs in a third of an inning.
Up next, (7-7) Mitchell hosts Sheridan, Wyoming, in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday at Cadwell Park.
Post 18 splits Saturday
Post 18 split its two games on Saturday during the Omaha Westside Classic. Post 18 lost to Millard South 52's 4-3, but defeated Home Federal 9-4 in the second game of the day.
Against Home Federal, Brady Hawkins smacked a grand slam to highlight a five-run second inning and a commanding 8-0 lead. Calvin Hegg, Peyton Nash, Isaac Rew and Max Schoenfelder each had a hit. Jackson Sadler, Hegg and Nash each drove in a run. Jared Miller earned the win. He lasted six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out five.
Against Millard South 52's, Mitchell gave up three runs in the second inning and later trailed 4-0 after four innings. Post 18 rallied and Joe VanOverschelde cut the deficit to 4-3 with an RBI single in the sixth inning, but it didn't get any closer. Hawkins and Jonah Schmidt each had a hit. Brady Brosz added an RBI. Hegg took the loss. He gave up three hits, four runs (two earned) and struck out five batters in 5.2 innings.
