SALEM-McCook/Miner scored runs early and late, while using stellar pitching in between to defeat Madison, 7-1, in American Legion baseball action on Monday.
McCook/Miner (1-0) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and then tacked on five runs in the sixth for insurance. Meanwhile, Mitch Kramer tossed five scoreless innings, surrendering two hits and three walks to pick up the win. He also went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate,
Isaac Feldhaus started the scoring by driving in a run with a ground ball, Jacob Cheeseman added an RBI single with two outs, for one of five runs scored with two outs in the game.
Four of McCook/Miner's five runs in the sixth were scored with two outs, sparked by an RBI single from Kramer and a two-run single by Kyle Tuschen.
Tyler Tappe took the loss for Madison after giving up four earned runs on seven hits in five innings. Carson Hunsley drove in the lone run in the top of the seventh.
McCook/Miner travels to Chamberlain on Friday.
