The Mitchell Junior Legion baseball team racked up 18 hits on Sunday as it swept a doubleheader against Huron at Drake Field. Mitchell scored two runs in the final two innings to earn an 8-7 win over the Tigers in Game 1, followed by a 11-4 win in the second game.
Jonah Schmidt scored on an error in the sixth inning of the first game to tie the game at 7-all. Then in the seventh, after Jacob Schumacher drew a leadoff walk, Colby Gillen hit a walk-off single in the next at-bat.
Jake Helleloid and Tate DeBoer both had two hits, with Mitchell finishing with eight as a team. Evan Demaranville earned the win, allowing six earned runs in four innings. He also struck out eight batters. Gillen pitched the final three innings, striking out three and allowing an unearned run.
In Game 2, Carson Fahey and Schmidt each had three hits, leading the way in Mitchell’s 10-hit contest. The game was highlighted by a five-run third inning, highlighted by Nick Lord’s two-RBI double. Schmidt also drove in three runs, while Helleloid had two RBIs.
On the mound, Helleloid earned the win, striking out five and allowing four runs (three earned) in his four-inning start. Masen Thompson tossed three shutout innings.
Mitchell (3-3) plays a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday at Sioux Falls West.
