Area baseball roundup: Gregory County holds off Honkers
PLATTE—Gregory County used a three-run first inning to move past Platte-Geddes/Dakota Christian/White Lake/Corsica, 5-2, on Tuesday in Class B prep baseball play.
Tommy Determan connected on a two-run double in the top of the first and Hunter VanNuewenhuis plated Coy Determan on a ground out. Coy Determan would hit a two-run double with two outs in the fourth to put Gregory County up 5-1.
Landon Schulte and Blake Moke each had RBI singles for the Honkers.
Aaron Sundquist didn't allow an earned run on two hits in 2 1/3 innings to get the win on the mound, while Coy Determan gave up one earned run on three hits and registered six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Moke took the loss for the Honkers, surrendering four runs on two hits and five walks in three innings.
McCook Central/Montrose 12, Sioux Falls Christian 5
MONTROSE—McCook Central/Montrose broke open a tie game with a seven-run seventh inning in a win over Sioux Falls Christian on Tuesday in prep baseball action.
Jake Cheeseman went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Peyton Cleveland drove in two runs. On the mound, Parker Scheier allowed an earned run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Raygen Randall gave up four runs (three earned) in 4 1/3 innings.
Jett Olszewski went 3-for-4 with four RBIs for Sioux Falls Christian, while Nate Peters and Mason Runia both had two hits. Runia suffered the loss, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and four walks.
West Central 14, McCook Central/Montrose 10
MONTROSE—West Central scored seven unanswered runs to outlast McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday in prep baseball action.
Trailing 5-2, MCM scored eight runs on four hits and four walks in the fourth inning, capped by a an RBI double by Avery Feterl.
They couldn't hang onto the lead, however, as West Central scored seven runs on five walks and four errors in the final two innings.
Feterl took the loss on the mound after surrendering three earned runs (five total) on three hits and four walks in two innings. He helped his own cause at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Bobby Koepsell and Raygen Randall added two RBIs apiece.
MCM committed nine errors in the game.
Bon Homme/Scotland 10, Wagner/Avon 0
TYNDALL—Tyler Kopp blasted two home runs and drove in three runs as Bon Homme/Scotland took down Wagner/Avon in Region 1 West Division prep baseball action.
Kopp's first home run led off the bottom of the first inning, while Josh Schmidt added an RBI double and Beau Rothschadl hit a two-run bomb as part of a four-run frame.
Kopp would add his second homer in the ensuing inning and Rothschadl hit a two-run single to take an 8-0 lead.
Christian Uecker picked up the win for Bon Homme/Scotland after pitching three scoreless innings in which he surrendered two hits and struck out seven batters.
Wagner/Avon 11, Turner-Hutch 0
TYNDALL—Preston Nedved went 3-for-4 at the plate and smacked two home runs to pace Wagner/Avon to a high school baseball victory over Turner-Hutch on Monday. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Nedved, who drove in four runs, belted a three-run homer in the third inning and had a solo blast in the fifth inning.
Brayden Carda struck out four batters, gave up one hit and zero runs through five innings. Carda recorded two hits at the plate.
Chance Blaha, Nolan Dvorak and Devon Medricky each had a hit. Medricky and Dustin Honomichl each drove in a run.
Madison 10, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central 0
MADISON—Tyler Tappe struck out nine batters and walked seven in a five-inning no-hitter to lead Madison past Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central on Monday.
Tappe also added two RBIs at the plate, while Mitch Williams drove in three runs and Evan Applewick went 3-for-4.
Mason Schelske took the loss for W/WS/SC on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in two innings. Five pitchers gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits and eight walks.
