DWU blanks Hastings twice in GPAC double dip

HASTINGS, Neb.—The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team scored a pair of shutout wins on the road against Hastings College on Sunday in Great Plains Athletic Conference play, but got there in different ways.

DWU poured on the runs late in Game 1 for an 8-0 win, while jumping out to an early lead in the second game en route to a 9-0 win.

In the first game, the Tigers broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kalub Carmichael scored on a wild pitch with two outs, opening the floodgates.

DWU (16-17, 10-8 GPAC) scored three runs in the fifth inning, once again with two outs. Wes Anderson struck out, but reached first on a dropped third strike and the Tigers took advantage. Chandler Bakley plated Winner native Drew DeMers on an RBI single and eventually scored on a bases-loaded walk.

Bakley would add another RBI single in the sixth as part of a four-run frame, while Tyler Torres added a two-run single as Hastings (7-23, 2-15) struggled to find the strike zone. In total, nine DWU batters were hit by a pitch, while seven walked.

Torres was 1-for-2 on the day, while Bakley went 2-for-3. Dominique Boerger pitched all seven innings, earning the shutout on three hits and fanned five in process.

In the second game, the Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back.

Kyle Bailey drove in Anderson on an RBI single for the first run of the game, while Colome native Reed Harter and Joseph Hanisch each drove in a pair on two-run singles. Torres scored on a bases-loaded walk and Bailey capped the inning with another RBI single.

DWU scored on another bases-loaded walk in the third, along with another Harter RBI single. Hastings once again walked seven batters, while the Tigers recorded 14 hits and nine earned runs in the win.

Gavin Reichmuth registered a complete-game shutout, surrendering seven hits and one walk in nine innings of work.

The two teams are back in action at 2 p.m. Monday for another doubleheader in Hastings.
