Amateur baseball roundup: Platte pushes past Wagner

PLATTE -- Three straight Platte hits in the first inning, including a Ryan Allen RBI triple, ended up being the only runs of the game as the Killer Tomatoes knocked out Wagner 3-0 of the District 5B amateur baseball on Tuesday.

Brandon Kemp had a game-high three hits for Platte, while Richard Sternberg also chipped in a pair of hits. On the mound, Michael Buitenbos struck out six and allowed seven hits and a walk in a complete-game effort.

Hunter Hewitt had three of Wagner’s hits, and Derek Soukup hit a double in the third. Alex Kocer threw all eight innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits and a walk. He also struck out four.

Platte (6-10) plays Parkston at 8 p.m. on Thursday. Wagner finishes the season 4-12.

Corsica/Stickney 6, Mount Vernon 1

PLATTE -- The Corsica/Stickney Horned Frogs racked up 11 hits and knocked off the Mount Vernon Mustangs in the District 5B amateur baseball tournament on Tuesday.

Aaron Groeneweg paced Corsica/Stickney with three hits, while Ryan Buck had two hits and knocked in two runs. Logan Risse and Nathan Blom both had two-RBI singles. Adam Fink, Kris Menning, Jared Hermanek and Brad Groeneweg had a hit apiece. Menning earned the win. He gave up four hits, one earned run and struck out five batters in nine innings.

For Mount Vernon, Chase Hetland had two hits, while Deric Denning and Owen London each had had a hit. Denning took the loss. He struck out 13 batters, gave up 11 hits and six earned runs in eighth innings.

Corsica/Stickney (9-9) plays Dimock/Emery at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Mount Vernon finishes the season 6-15.

District 4BFlandreau 9, Canova 0

HUMBOLDT -- The Flandreau Cardinals blanked the Canova Gang in District 4B amateur baseball tourney action on Tuesday.

Canova out-hit Flandreau 5-4, but the Gang left eight runners stranded on base. Jason Miller led Canova with a single and a double, while Garrett Gassman, Derek Miller and Brett Bosn each had a hit apiece. Gavin Gassman took the loss, giving up three hits, seven runs (five earned) and striking out two batters in five innings.

Flandreau’s Jared Campbell, Mitch Foster, Tanner Harris and Jake Patterson each had a hit. Foster and Keith Cutler drove in two runs each.

Canova (15-5) plays Humboldt/Hartford at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Flandreau plays Dell Rapids PBR or Colman in the championship game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
