Legion teams turn focus to regional tournaments
The Legion baseball Class B regional playoffs will heat up this week, with three tournaments of area interest.
The Region 4B tournament is plans to kick off with Platte/Geddes and Corsica/Stickney taking the field at 5 p.m. at Leonard Cimpl Park in Tabor, followed by the hosts and Parkston at 7 p.m.
Wagner and Scotland/Menno drew the byes in the bracket, with Wagner taking on the Parkston/Tabor winner at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by Scotland/Menno against the Platte/Geddes and Corsica/Stickney winner at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Three games are on the schedule for Friday, starting with a pair of elimination games at 3 and 5 p.m., and the winner's bracket semifinals at 7 p.m. Two more elimination games will be played at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, with the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday, and an if-necessary title game at 3 p.m. Sunday.
The Region 5B tournament begins today in Canova and runs through Sunday. Colton will take on Chamberlain at 5 p.m. today in the opening game, followed by McCook/Miner and Baltic at 7 p.m. Humboldt/Hartford and Wessington Springs pulled the byes, with H/H taking on the Colton/Chamberlain winner at 5 p.m. Thursday and Wessington Springs against either M/M or Baltic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Like the Region 4B tournament, three games will be played in Canova on Friday, at 1 p.m., 3:30 p.m, and 6 p.m., with the last of those contests deciding the undefeated team to reach the championship round. Games on Saturday and Sunday will be played at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with Sunday's games to decide the championship.
The Region 7B tournament has just four teams and starts Friday in Spearfish. Winner/Colome takes on Martin at 1 p.m. Central time in the opening game, followed by Gregory and Spearfish. Three games will be played on Saturday ahead of the 1 p.m. championship game on Sunday, with a second title game at 3:30 p.m., if needed. Spearfish is the defending region champion but Winner/Colome has moved into the bracket after competing in Region 4B a season ago.
Each of the state's seven regions will decide their representative this weekend to join the hosts Redfield at the Class B state tournament, which begins July 27 at American Legion Field in Redfield.
Post 18 set for Sturgis
Mitchell's postseason tournament plans are set as well, heading to the Region 3A tournament in Sturgis on July 25.
Post 18, currently 23-21 on the season, will play in the first game of the tournament at Strong Field in Sturgis, with a 6 p.m. Central time contest against Rapid City Post 320 (29-16). The hosts Sturgis (10-21) and Rapid City Post 22 (45-9) will play in the 8:30 p.m. game on July 25.
The winners of those contests will play at 3 p.m. July 26, with the elimination game to follow at 5:30 p.m. The loser of the first game Thursday and the winner of the second game will meet at 8 p.m. for the final spot in Friday's championship round.
The championship round on July 27 will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a second if-necessary game at 8:30 p.m. Both participants in the championship game will advance to the Class A state tournament, which will be Aug. 1-5 at Hyde Stadium in Pierre. As the hosts, Pierre Post 8 is not part of the regional qualifying tournament this year.
Rapid City Post 22 reached the championship round of the Gopher Classic on Tuesday, falling 8-7 in the championship game against Millard West, Nebraska, which was the same team that eliminated Mitchell on Monday in the Round of 16. Mitchell, Rapid City Post 22 and Pierre all reached the playoff round at the Twin Cities tournament this year.
