In the opening game of the Class A state Legion baseball tournament at Cadwell Park, Yankton Post 12 provided a surprise to perennial powerhouse Rapid City Post 22 in a 4-1 victory at Cadwell Park.

Yankton (25-21) got a strong performance from Dakota Wesleyan University signee Kieren Luellman, who threw 104 pitches in a complete-game effort, allowing seven hits and one unearned run. Ethan Wishon and Caid Koletzky each had two hits for Yankton, while Owen Feser had an RBI.

Zach Chiolis took the loss for Rapid City Post 22 (44-14), throwing 2 2/3 innings and allowing three hits and three unearned runs. The Hardhats made five errors in the loss. Jace Caldwell had two hits, while Blake Weaver had the lone RBI in the second inning.

Yankton will face Brandon Valley at 5 p.m. Saturday in the second round, while Post 22 will face Watertown at 10 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game.

Renner 5, Pierre 3

Three first-inning runs for Renner Post 307 helped the Royals pick up an opening-round victory at the Class A state Legion baseball tournament at Cadwell Park.

Reece Arbogast pitched a complete game, logging 100 pitches and finishing with eight hits and three runs allowed, while striking out four for Renner. The Royals were paced by two hits each from Nick Hoekstra and Sam Stukel. Mason Runia knocked in a pair of runs, and Stukel and Daulton Vanderloo each had RBIs. C.J. Stukel and Sam Stukel each had two stolen bases for the Royals, as Renner had seven stolen bases in the win. Andy Moen added a double in the winning cause.

Andrew Coverdale had two hits and an RBI for Pierre Post 8, while Cade Hinkle and Jacob Mayer each had RBIs. Maguire Raske was charged with the loss, allowing eight hits, five runs (three earned) and striking out four in 4 2/3 innings. Jacob Mayer recorded four outs in relief for Pierre, allowing one hit. In all, the Pierre pitching staff issued seven walks in the loss.

Renner (33-22) advances to play Mitchell in the final game of the day Saturday at approximately 7:30 p.m. Mitchell won its only meeting with the Royals on July 9, claiming a 6-3 contest in Mitchell. Pierre (22-22) faces Harrisburg in an elimination game at approximately 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Brandon Valley 10, Watertown 0 (5 innings)

Joe Kolbeck had three hits and drove in three runs, and Dylan Kirkeby had a sharp performance on the mound, helping Brandon Valley Post 131 to an opening round victory at the Class A state Legion baseball tournament at Cadwell Park.

The score was 3-0 Brandon Valley through three innings, before the Region 2A champions busted through with three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth to end the game via the 10-run rule. Kolbeck had a double, three runs scored and stole two bases. Thomas Scholten and Lake Terveer each had two hits, while Dayne Peyton had two hits and scored twice in the victory. Kirkeby threw all five innings on just 58 pitches, striking out four and allowing just one hit.

For Watertown, Mason Morris had the lone hit for Post 17. Tucker Bayles threw four innings and took the loss, allowing five hits, six runs (four earned) and five walks. Lexan Thorson recorded two outs, with six hits and four runs.

Brandon Valley (29-17) will play the first winner’s bracket game at 5 p.m. Saturday against Yankton. Facing elimination, Watertown (28-26) will face Rapid City Post 22 in the opening game at 10 a.m. Saturday.
