SIOUX FALLS -- The Mitchell White teener baseball team split its weekend games at the Sioux Falls Mid-Summer Classic, defeating Yankton 8-6 on Saturday and falling to Sioux Falls West 13-5.
Against Yankton, Lincoln Bates threw five innings for the victory, allowing seven hits, five runs and striking out three. Peyton Mandel picked up the two-inning save, allowing one hit and no runs. On offense, Mitchell drew eight walks and had six hits, with Karter Sibson leading the way with two hits and two stolen bases. Porter Geppert had a two-RBI single, and Tyson Sabers had two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Facing Sioux Falls West, Mitchell had 14 hits, including three from Bates and two each from Sabers, Peyton Mandel and Connor Degen. Sabers knocked in all three runs, while Bates scored twice.
Gavin Soukup started the game and took the loss, throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, five earned runs and striking out three. Degen pitched the remaining 2 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and four earned runs. Mitchell White made four errors in the loss.
Mitchell White (8-16) hosts Harrisburg in a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Tuesday.
Mitchell Black swept in weekend pair of games
SIOUX FALLS -- Mitchell Black struggled to muster much offense Saturday and Sunday at the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls, falling to Pierre 4-1 on Saturday, and Brookings Black 10-1 on Sunday
In the Pierre contest, Hudson Haley and Dylan Soulek each had two hits, while Connor Hohn had the lone RBI for Mitchell. Haley started the game and took the loss on the mound, allowing two hits and four runs. Lukas Bennett pitched the next four innings with one hit allowed, no runs and two strikeouts.
Peyton Schroder had the lone hit and run for Mitchell against Brookings, but Mitchell Black had five errors, allowing Brookings 10 runs on just five hits. A.J. Siemsen took the loss for Mitchell, allowing four hits, four earned runs and striking out two. Connor Hohn covered the final two innings, with one hit allowed.
Mitchell Black (10-21-2) is next in action at Brandon Valley for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
Gold teeners go 1-2 on weekend
SIOUX FALLS -- Four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed the Mitchell Gold 15-16 teener baseball team to pick up an exciting victory Saturday at the Mid-Summer Classic. Mitchell Gold ended the weekend 1-2, with a 13-4 loss to Papillion, Nebraska and an 11-4 loss to Lincoln Pius X in the consolation round on Sunday.
Brock Sparks and Brandon Sparks each drove in three runs, while Seth Muth, Landon Waddell and Riley McGinnis each had two hits. Waddell, Anders Enga, Brandon Sparks and Jackson Ebert each scored two runs. On the mound, Seth Muth earned the win in relief, allowing four hits, three runs and striking out two. Ty Neugebauer started and threw two innings, with three hits and five runs allowed.
No stats were reported for the games against Papillion and Lincoln Pius. Mitchell (17-8-1) plays at Aberdeen in a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday.
