BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- For the second straight year, the Mitchell Post 18 Legion baseball team put together a big weekend at the Gopher Classic.

Mitchell ran the table for a 5-0 record over three days, capped by a 12-0 win over host Bloomington Gold on Sunday to advance from the 96-team group play stage to the 16-team championship bracket, which begins Monday. It marks the second straight year Post 18 (29-14) has advanced to Gopher Classic bracket play, as Post 18’s win streak has stretched to 11 games.

All weekend, Mitchell received strong pitching and defense, capped by Jackson Sadler’s two-hit shutout against Bloomington Gold. Sadler threw 61 pitches and struck out three.

Mitchell scored three times each in the first and second innings, and tacked on six more runs in the third inning for the 12-run advantage. Carson Max was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases, while Brady Hawkins had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. Peyton Nash and Koby Larson each had two hits and two runs scored, as well.

Saturday’s action included a 12-0 win over Hibbing, Minnesota, and a 6-2 triumph over Osseo, Minnesota. In the five Gopher Classic games, Mitchell has outscored its opponents 46-10.

Against Hibbing, Mitchell picked up an eight-run third inning, which included a grand slam from Carson Max to cap the scoring. Post 18 had just four hits in the contest, drawing seven walks, five hit batsmen and four errors. Jackson Sadler had a double and drove in three runs, while Peyton Nash drew three walks and scored three times. Koby Larson and Sadler each scored twice.

Calvin Hegg pitched all five innings in the shortened game, allowing five hits in a shutout effort and striking out four.

Post 18 got another strong pitching performance against Osseo, with Jared Miller throwing a complete game, allowing eight hits, two runs and striking out eight.

Carson Max had three RBIs powered by a double and triple, while Max Schoenfelder had two hits and two RBIs. Ryan McGinnis and Brady Hawkins each had two hits, as well. All six Mitchell runs came in the second inning in the victory.

Mitchell will play at 11:30 a.m. Monday in its Round of 16 contest in Bloomington, Minnesota. If Post 18 wins its first game, it will play again at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinal round. Mitchell’s opponent was not yet finalized on Sunday night, but the likely opponent was Team Manitoba from Canada. It had a 4-1 record in its pool, tied with Rapid City Post 22, but Manitoba defeated Rapid City Post 22 4-3 head-to-head.

The Gopher Classic semifinals and championship are on Tuesday.
