ALEXANDRIA -- Cole Wenande drove in four runs and Tyson Gau struck out nine batters to lift Alexandria to a 7-2 Sunshine League amateur baseball victory over Winner/Colome on Wednesday.
Wenande went 3-for-4 at the plate and belted a two-run homer to round out the scoring in the sixth inning for Alexandria. In the second inning, he smacked a two-run triple to stake a 5-0 lead for the Angels.
Gau gave himself some run support right off the bat. In the first inning, Gau clubbed a two-run homer to start the scoring for Alexandria. On the mound, Gau allowed eight hits, two earned runs and issued one walk in the complete-game performance.
John Greicar added two hits and knocked in a run. Peyton Smith had Alexandria’s other hit.
For Winner/Colome, J.J. Farner hit a two-run single in the fourth inning for the only two runs of the game. Farner, Reed Harter and Dillon Lambley each finished with two hits apiece. Zach Harter and Kelly O’Bryan each had a hit. O’Bryan took the loss. He allowed five hits, five earned runs and struck out one batter in his 2.2-inning start. Connor Hopkins pitched 5.1 innings of relief, striking out seven batters, allowing two hits and two earned runs.
Alexandria (11-5, 10-2 Sunshine League) hosts Mount Vernon on July 16. Winner/Colome (10-3, 8-3 Sunshine League) hosts Platte today.
Canova 3, Madison 2 (10 innings)
CANOVA -- It took an extra inning, but an error sent home the game-winning run for Canova in the 10th inning to push it past Madison in a Cornbelt League game on Wednesday.
Derek Miller fanned 11 batters for the Gang in his 7.1-inning start. However, Justin Miller pitched the final 2.2 frames to earn the win. At the plate, Jared Miller put together a four-hit game as he drove in a pair of runs.
Canova (14-2, 13-0 Cornbelt League) plays at Colman today.
