Area volleyball roundup: McCook Central/Montrose sweeps MVP

MCM, Freeman, Wessington Springs among Monday's area winners

SALEM — McCook Central/Montrose won in straight sets Monday night, handing Mount Vernon/Plankinton just its second loss of the season. Set scores were 25-23, 26-24 and 25-17.

MCM (4-8): Brandy Pulse had 10 kills, while teammate Tayah McGregor had seven kills. Michaela McCormick and Aubree Kranz each had 12 digs and Brianna Even had 26 set assists for MCM, which hosts Flandreau in Montrose on Sept. 21.

MVP (7-2): Maria Baker had nine kills and 11 digs for the Titans, who had 17 assists from Shyla Tobin, two ace serves from Christa Glanzer and 11 digs from Tessa Pickart. Reagan Rus added two blocks. Up next, MVP plays at Canton on Sept. 23.

Freeman 3, Canton 1

FREEMAN — Canton picked up the first set but Freeman responded with the next three for a home victory Monday. Set scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-9, and 25-14.

Freeman (8-5): Erin Uecker had 17 kills, five blocks and 19 digs, with 12 kills, two blocks and 14 digs from Kate Miller. Lily Wipf had seven kills and 11 digs, with Ava Ammann logging 14 assists and eight digs. Ashlin Jacobsen and Cami Fransen each had nine digs for the Flyers, who visit Scotland on Sept. 21.


Canton (6-6): No stats were reported for the C-Hawks, who visit Tri-Valley on Sept. 21.

Wessington Springs 3, TDA 1

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — A solid home effort helped Wessington Springs to its sixth victory of the season with a four-set win Monday night. Set scores were 25-23, 25-20, 21-25 and 28-26.

Wessington Springs (6-4): Sarah Poncelow led a balanced offense with 10 kills and six blocks, while Avery Orth had eight kills and seven blocks for the Spartans. Carissa Scheel and Ashlyn Weber each had three aces, Raylee Fagerhaug had 30 digs, and Alyssa Grohs had 20 digs for the Spartans, who host Lower Brule on Sept. 23.

TDA (4-4): Hannah Stremick had 43 assists to lead the Nighthawks, with 18 kills from Megan Reiner and 16 kills from Gracey Schatz. Reiner added three blocks and 20 digs, with Emma Fink tacking on 14 digs for TDA, which goes to Lake Andes on Sept. 21 to face Andes Central/Dakota Christian.

Mobridge-Pollock 3, Winner 0

WINNER — Mobridge-Pollock returned to its winning ways on Monday, picking up a three-set sweep over Big Dakota Conference rival Winner. Set scores were 25-18, 25-17, and 25-19, and the victory came after Winner defeated M-P in three sets at the conference tournament on Saturday.

Mobridge-Pollock (13-2): Landyn Henderson had 15 kills to lead the Tigers, who had 20 assists and five kills from Emma Keller, with five kills from Leah Overland. Ava Stoick had 19 digs to lead the Tigers defense. Mobridge-Pollock hosts Lemmon on Sept. 23.

Winner (8-3): Skyler Hansen had eight kills and 12 digs, with seven kills, two blocks and 15 digs from Ellie Brozik. Lexi Klein had 15 set assists for the Warriors. Winner is at Parkston on Sept. 21.
