Area volleyball roundup: Flyers advance to Hanson tourney finals

ALEXANDRIA -- Freeman cruised to its straight-set win on Tuesday at the Hanson Early Bird tournament, taking down Andes Central/Dakota Christian to advance to the championship match. Set scores were 25-23, 25-16.

Freeman (2-0): Emily Miller had a team-high six kills, while Rijjy Peterson added five kills and served an ace. Jaimie Glanzer and Oddy Pankratz both served two aces. Emmarie Edwards led the team with five digs in the win and Ava Ammann added 14 assists. The Flyers play Gayville-Volin in the championship on Thursday.

Andes Central/Dakota Christian (1-1): Isabel Pheifer served three aces in the loss to go with seven digs and two kills. Melanie Mudder added a team-high eight digs for the Thunder. Mackenzie Muckey added seven kills. The Thunder face Avon in the third-place game on Thursday.

Gayville-Volin 2, Avon 0

ALEXANDRIA -- Gayville-Volin knocked off Avon to advance to the championship match of the Hanson Early Bird tournament on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-18 and 25-18.

Gayville-Volin (2-0): Kayla VanOsdel led the way with six kills, while Samantha Olson added four kills and five blocks. Molly Larson contributed 16 digs and Olivia Petrik had 10 digs. Keeley Larson dished out 12 assists. The Raiders play Freeman on Thursday in the championship match.


Avon (1-1): Madisyn Cameron led the Pirates with 10 assists and four digs. Tiffany Pelton added four kills, while Natalie Zacharias had three kills and three digs. Katie Gretschmann had 12 digs. The Pirates play Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Thursday in the third-place game.

Freeman 2, Platte-Geddes 0

ALEXANDRIA -- After a close first set, Freeman handily defeated Platte-Geddes in the first round of the Hanson Early bird tournament on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-22, 25-17.

Freeman (1-0): Ava Ammann dished out nine assists, while Emmarie Edwards served three aces. Cara Maske finished with five assists in the win. Emily Miller recorded five kills and Rijjy Peterson added four digs, three kills and a pair of blocks.

Platte-Geddes (0-1): Raegan Stegmeier had six digs for the Black Panthers. Haley Hoffman added four assists, three digs and three serves. The Black Panthers take on Freeman Academy/Marion on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

AC/DC 2, FAM 0

ALEXANDRIA -- Andes Central/Dakota Christian topped Freeman Academy/Marion in an opening round match on Tuesday at the Hanson Early Bird tournament. Set scores were 25-10 and 25-21.

AC/DC (1-0): Mackenzie Muckey finished with eight kills and two aces. Lexie VanderPol added five kills and four blocks. Isabel Pheifer chipped in with five kills and six aces. Anna Medicine Horn recorded seven assists and four aces.

FAM (0-1): Maria Cortes led the Bearcats with three kills. Alivea Weber added four assists and Leah Goodwin finished with four digs. The Bearcats play Platte-Geddes on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Gayville-Volin 2, Hanson 1

ALEXANDRIA -- After dropping the first set, Gayville-Volin recovered to win the final two sets to take down Hanson in the first round of the Hanson Early Bird tournament on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-27, 25-20, 25-19.


Gayville-Volin (1-0): Sam Olson put down a team-high 11 kills and three blocks. Olivia Petrik and Taya Rose added 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Keeley Larson dished out 29 assists in the win.

Hanson (0-1): Morgan Huber finished with 11 digs and eight kills for the Beavers, while Abby Kortan dished out 18 assists to go with two digs. Jada Tuttle finished with 15 digs. Grace Weber had eight kills, as well. The Beavers play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Avon 2, SCW 0

ALEXANDRIA -- Avon held Sanborn Central/Woonsocket to under 20 points in both sets as it swept the Blackhawks in the first round of the Hanson Early Bird tournament on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-19, 25-18.

Avon (1-0): Madisyn Cameron recorded a team-high 17 assists, while Natalie Zacharias stuffed the stat sheet with six kills, four aces and three digs. Katie Gretschmann added 13 digs in the win for the Pirates.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (0-1): Morgan Schmiedt finished with 11 digs and four assists for the Blackhawks. Kaylee White and Katie Schmit added eight and seven digs, respectively. The Blackhawks play Hanson on Thursday in the consolation bracket.

Howard 3, De Smet 0

HOWARD -- Howard picked up a three-set sweep against De Smet to open the 2019 campaign.

Howard (1-0): Kyra Shumaker led Howard with 14 digs and six aces. Emma Rudebusch dished out 14 assists and had two aces. Madison Kizer finished with eight kills and six blocks. Howard plays Oldham-Ramona Rutland on Thursday in Rutland.

De Smet (0-1): Kennadi Bucholz had five kills, five digs and two aces. Autumn Wilkinson finished with five kills. De Smet plays Deuel on Thursday in Clear Lake.


MCM 3, Bridgewater-Emery 1

SALEM -- Class A No. 3 McCook Central/Montrose dropped its first set of the season to Bridgewater-Emery, but rebounded to win the next three sets, 21-25, 25-21, 25-13 and 25-12.

McCook Central/Montrose (1-0): Emily Bies handed out 29 assists, while coming up with 12 digs, five kills and five aces. Jacy Pulse added 12 digs, nine aces and five kills, while Aleah Ries had 12 digs, 11 kills and three aces. Abigail Van Ruler pitched in 15 kills, three blocks and three aces. The Fighting Cougars play in the Parkston tournament on Saturday.

Bridgewater-Emery (0-1): Sophia Potter led the way with 11 assists and eight digs, while Julia Weber added eight digs, seven kills and three aces and Kerrigan Schultz had nine assists and nine digs. The Huskies travel to Howard on Sep. 3.

Winner 3, Bon Homme 0

WINNER -- Winner opened its season with a home sweep over Bon Homme on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-17, 25-21, 25-13.

Winner (1-0): Maggie LaCompte had 19 digs and three aces for the Warriors. Ellie Brozik added 12 digs and 11 kills, while Kalla Bertram and Mackenzie Levi finished with 16 and 13 digs, respectively. Levi also dished out a team-high 20 assists and Bertram added nine kills. Winner hosts Miller on Thursday.

Bon Homme (0-1): Ciera Himes finished with seven digs and five kills for the Cavaliers. Jenae Alberts added seven digs, and Johanna Jelsma finished with eight digs, six assists and two aces. Bon Homme plays Viborg-Hurley on Thursday in Viborg.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton 3, Parkston 0

After waltzing away with the first set, Mount Vernon/Plankinton nipped Parkston by two points in back-to-back sets to seal the sweep, 25-17, 25-23 and 25-23.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (1-0): Ellie Weidenbach came up with 22 digs, while Sydney Wickersham added 13. Maggie Baumgart chipped in five kills and three blocks and Izzy Hohn dished out 10 assists. The Titans play Parker on Thursday in Mount Vernon.

Parkston (0-1): Katlyn Briggs had a match-high 13 kills and six blocks, while Shyla Tobin had 13 assists and Reagan Klooz had 10 assists. The Trojans host Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Thursday.
