Area volleyball roundup: Balanced offense lifts Huskies over Wolves

EMERY -- A balanced offensive attack carried Bridgewater-Emery to a sweep of Menno in a Cornbelt Conference clash on Tuesday, 25-11, 25-12 and 25-17.

Bridgewater-Emery (3-1): Kennedee Weber and Haley Schulz recorded eight kills apiece, while Kerrigan Schultz chipped in seven. Sophia Potter had 21 assists and Schultz also added nine assists. Julia Weber and Taylor Schallenkamp had four kills each. The Huskies play Irene-Wakonda on Thursday in Wakonda.

Menno (2-2): Hannah Fischer had six assists and five digs, while Kaylie Schempp came up with 13 digs. Jesse Munkvold also added four kills and three blocks. The Wolves host Ethan on Thursday.

Mitchell Christian 3, Wessington Springs 0

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Mitchell Christian and Wessington Springs played a close third set, but the Golden Eagles still managed to sweep the Spartans on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-16, 25-19 and 26-24.

Mitchell Christian (2-1): Erica Thompson stuffed the stat sheet with 19 assists, 14 digs and a pair of aces. Anna Cooper put down a team-high 12 kills, while Maggie Reynen had 15 digs and two aces. Whisper Eben and Cooper each had four blocks. The Golden Eagles play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Thursday in Forestburg.


Wessington Springs (1-3): Alyssa Grohs dished out six assists and recorded 10 digs. Makayla Dornbusch finished with a team-high four kills in the loss. The Spartans travel to Gregory on Saturday.

MCM 3, Sioux Valley 0

SALEM -- Class A No. 5 McCook Central/Montrose cruised to a home prep volleyball on win, defeating Sioux Valley. Set scores were 25-9, 25-11 and 25-13.

McCook Central/Montrose (6-2): Emily Bies stuffed the stat sheet with 18 assists, seven digs, six kills and three aces. Abigail Van Ruler and Aleah Bies both served four aces for the Fighting Cougars. Van Ruler also added a team-high 10 kills, while Jacy Pulse finished with eight digs and six kills. The Fighting Cougars play Garretson on Thursday in Volga.

Sioux Valley (2-2): Miakken Vincent racked up 10 kills and five digs in the loss. Haydyn Hauge recorded 12 assists and five digs for the Cossacks. Rylan Willis had a team-high seven digs. The Cossacks play Beresford on Thursday in Volga.

Hanson 3, Howard 2

ALEXANDRIA -- Howard captured the first two sets on Tuesday, but Hanson stormed back to win three in a row to take the match in five sets, 11-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 18-16.

Hanson (3-3): Abby Kortan had seven kills and 18 assists, while Morgan Huber had a team-high nine kills. Elizabeth Arend and Andrea Thelen had six kills apiece. Hannah Robinson came up with 19 digs and Josie Bartscher had five blocks. The Beavers play Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Thursday in Plankinton.

Howard (2-3): Austyn Smit had 10 kills, while Piper Thompson added seven and Madison Kizer chipped in five and eight blocks. Kyra Shumaker came up with 15 digs. The Tigers host Elkton-Lake Benton on Thursday.

SCW 3, Corsica-Stickney 2

WOONSOCKET -- Sanborn Central/Woonsocket battled back after dropping two straight sets to take down Corsica-Stickney in five sets on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 25-20 and 15-6.
Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (1-5): Kaylee White recorded a team-high 17 digs and three aces. Mariah Jost recorded 16 digs and eight kills, while Trista White served three aces. Morgan Schmiedt dished out 11 assists. The Blackhawks play Mitchell Christian on Thursday in Forestburg.
Corsica-Stickney (2-1): Morgan DeLange and Raven Barse each served four aces, while DeLange added 14 assists and 13 kills. Jenna Bamberg added 11 kills. Camden Plooster finished with a team-high 19 assists, while Alexis Tilton added 18 digs. Barse and Paige Wright each had 15 digs, too. The Jaguars play James Valley Christian on Thursday in Huron.

Vermillion 3, Bon Homme 0

VERMILLION -- Vermillion earned its seventh win of the season on Tuesday with a straight-set win over Bon Homme. Set scores were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-17.


Vermillion (7-2): Lexie Saunders finished with 10 assists, five digs, four aces and three kills in the win. Shandie Ludwig added 12 digs and served four aces, while Kennedy Pratt dished out a team-high 11 assists. Toria Andre finished with nine kills. The Tanagers travel to Tri-Valley on Thursday.

Bon Homme (1-4): Johanna Jelsma finished with five digs, three assists and an ace in the loss. Jenae Alberts recorded five digs and three kills, while Makayla Kelley added three digs and two kills. The Cavaliers play Platte-Geddes on Thursday in Tyndall.

Burke 3, Chamberlain 0

CHAMBERLAIN -- A two-point win in the second-half was the lone hiccup for Burke in a road sweep of Chamberlain on Tuesday, 25-17, 26-24 and 25-15.

Burke (4-0): Taylee Indahl had 16 kills and three blocks, while Lainee Schonebaum had seven kills and 10 digs and Bobbi Jo Wischmann had 23 assists and 10 digs. Sally Hakin pitched in 10 digs and three blocks. The Cougars play St. Mary’s (Neb.) on Thursday in Bonesteel.

Chamberlain (5-3): Hannah Anderson, Mya Knippling and Maggy Pickner had five kills apiece. Makenzy Mutziger had 10 digs and Emma Powers had eight assists. The Cubs play Crow Creek on Thursday in Stephan.

Wagner 3, Platte-Geddes 0

PLATTE -- Wagner never dropped more than 15 points in a set during its straight-set win over Platte-Geddes on Tuesday. Set scores were 25-14, 25-15 and 25-14.

Wagner (5-2): Emilea Cimpl finished with 27 assists, 12 digs and five aces in the win for the Red Raiders. Abby Brunsing added 13 digs and eight kills, while Maesa Dvorak put down nine kills. The Red Raiders host Gregory on Thursday.

Platte-Geddes (4-2): Karly Vanderwerff added five digs, three kills and two blocks for the Black Panthers. Avery DeVries finished with four digs, three assists and two blocks, while Regan Hoffman recorded eight digs and put down a pair of kills. Raegan Stegmeier added 15 digs. The Black Panthers play Bon Homme on Thursday in Tyndall.


Ethan 3, MVP 1

ETHAN -- Mount Vernon/Plankinton won the first set of its contest against Ethan on Tuesday, but the Rustlers rallied to win the following three to take the match, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-2): Katlyn Briggs put down 10 kills and made three blocks and Rebecca Gerlach came up with 20 digs, while Reagan Klooz handed out 19 assists. The Titans play Hanson on Thursday in Plankinton.

Ethan (3-1): Jada Plastow tallied 16 kills, 21 digs and three blocks, while Cameryn Logan added 16 digs, nine kills and seven aces. Jessica Bartscher also dished out 30 assists and Ava Lingemann came up with 15 digs. The Rustlers travel to Menno on Thursday.

Gayville-Volin 3, Scotland 2

SCOTLAND -- Gayville-Volin dropped the first two sets, but rebounded to win in five sets. Set scores were 23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-22 and 15-12.

Gayville-Volin (6-0): Jadyn Hubbard had 13 digs and 11 kills, while Keeley Larson added 38 assists and five aces. Molly Larson had 22 digs and Olivia Petrik finished with a team-high 28 digs. Samantha Olson put down 11 kills in the win. The Raiders travel to Freeman on Thursday.

Scotland (2-2): Bella Vitek led the way with 16 kills and three blocks. Grace Fryda added 20 digs and seven kills. Rylee Conrad recorded 39 assists and three aces. Kennedy Bietz posted 32 digs and six kills. Delanie VanDriel added 22 digs and nine kills. The Highlanders host Freeman Academy/Marion on Thursday.
