Three Kernels named to all-ESD football team
Three players on the Mitchell High School football team were named to the all-Eastern South Dakota Conference team Sunday.
Tight end Ethan Jones, linebacker Tyler Larson and defensive back Matt Larson were each named to the all-ESD team for their performances in the 2013 season.
The Kernels’ season ended Thursday night with a 48-12 loss to Yankton in the first round of the Class 11AA playoffs in Yankton.
Mitchell Kernel 7th, 8th grade volleyball teams finish undefeated

The Mitchell Kernel seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams each won the Big Four tournament Saturday at Mitchell Middle School.
Both teams finished the 2013 season undefeated.
DWU women’s soccer season ends with loss
SEWARD, Neb. - The Dakota Wesleyan University women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Concordia Saturday in Seward, Neb.
The loss ended the season for the DWU after failing to make the GPAC playoffs. The Tigers finished 4-12-2 overall and 1-8-1 in the GPAC.
Against Concordia, the Tigers got off to a quick start as Megan Johnson scored an unassisted goal in the 15th minute to put DWU up 1-0.
Concordia answered quickly with first-half goals from Ashlie Sklenicka and Rachel Brandt to take the lead for good.
Tiger goalkeeper Erika Carpenter made seven saves on nine shots in the loss.
DWU men’s soccer seeded sixth in playoffs after loss

SEWARD, Neb. - The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s soccer team ended its regular season with 1-0 loss to Concordia University Saturday in Seward, Neb.
DWU goalkeeper Alex Nelson recorded 10 saves, while the Tigers took 23 shots, eight of which were on goal.
Concordia’s Gideon Soenksen scored the game’s only goal in the 25th minute.
DWU ends the regular season 9-7-2 overall and 4-5-1 in the GPAC. The Tigers are seeded sixth in the GPAC tournament and play No. 3 Doane at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Crete, Neb.
DWU falls in four sets to Concordia
SEWARD, Neb. - The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team fell to Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Concordia Saturday in four sets.
Set scores were 25-27, 25-20, 25-17, 25-11.
Taylor Spence had 10 kills and 10 digs to lead the way for Wesleyan. Hannah Hammer also had 10 kills, while Lacey Reimnitz had 14 digs. Rebecca Garcia added 19 assists for the Tigers.

Claire White and Paige Getz had 15 kills apiece to lead the way for Concordia.
DWU (7-26, 0-15 GPAC) plays Mount Marty College Wednesday in Yankton.
