Area playoff volleyball roundup: Platte-Geddes advances in Region 6B, claims top seed for Class B SoDak 16

Parkston, Wagner, Burke among area’s other winners Thursday

BONESTEEL — Platte-Geddes took a straight-set win over Avon in a Region 6B semifinal Thursday night to advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 25-11, 25-12 and 25-7.

Platte-Geddes (31-4): Cadence Van Zee powered her way to team-highs with 11 kills, 17 digs and 10 ace serves. Karly VanDerWerff added nine kills, nine digs and one block, as Avery DeVries put up 27 assists, four aces and six digs. Regan Hoffman had seven kills, 11 digs and five aces for the Black Panthers, who will take the No. 1 seed to the SoDak 16 and will face off with Faith (20-17) on Nov. 9.

Avon: Tiffany Pelton posted seven kills, eight digs and one block, and Courtney Sees had four kills and six digs. McKenna Kocmich put up 12 assists, nine digs and one ace for the Pirates, whose season ends with a record of 19-11.

Wagner 3, SCW 0

WAGNER — Wagner earned a straight-set win against Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in a Region 5A semifinal Thursday night to advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 25-14, 25-16 and 25-16.

Wagner (26-6): Emma Yost recorded 11 kills, 12 digs and three ace serves. Shona Kocer, Kya Kjeldgaard and Shalayne Nagel each posted four blocks, with Kocer and Kjeldgaard adding seven and five kills, respectively, while Nagel chipped in 12 digs. Macy Koupal put up 28 assists and one ace for the Red Raiders, who are seeded No. 4 and match up with No. 13 Elk Point-Jefferson in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket: Trista White had nine kills and one ace serve, as Teya Moody recorded 21 digs and 18 assists. Dayton Easton had 20 digs and an ace, and Kenna Ochsner had eight kills and one block. The Blackhawks’ first season in Class A comes to an end with a record of 22-7.

Burke 3, TDA 1

BONESTEEL — Burke took the first, third and fourth sets to defeat Tripp-Delmont/Armour in a Region 6B semifinal Thursday night and advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-16.

Burke (28-8): Adisyn Indahl notched 24 kills and 17 digs, as Kailee Frank added 13 kills and 13 digs. Paige Bull powered her way to five kills and four blocks, and Ava Sargent put up 21 assists, 13 digs and a pair of ace serves. The 10th-seeded Cougars match up with Wolsey-Wessington (27-4) in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour: Megan Reiner posted 12 kills and 18 digs, as Gracey Schatz added 11 kills and one block. Hannah Stremick put up 30 assists and two aces for the Nighthawks, who end their season with a record of 17-14.

Chester Area 3, Ethan 1

MADISON — Ethan stole the second set but couldn’t keep pace with Chester Area, which took the Region 4B semifinal match in four sets Thursday night. Set scores were 25-15, 16-25, 25-20 and 25-14.

Chester Area (25-5): Breckyn Ewoldt led the Flyers with 17 kills, as Lily VanHal put up 25 assists and three ace serves. Serena Larson and Addison Bates each had two blocks, and Emery Larson had a team-high 32 digs. Chester Area has earned the No. 4 seed in Class B and will play Gayville-Volin in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9.

Ethan: Bella Neshiem posted 16 kills, 25 digs and two aces, and Hannah Bartscher powered her way to 12 kills, 18 digs, seven blocks and one ace. Ava Lingemann put up 28 assists for the Rustlers, who end their season with a record of 17-14.

Colman-Egan 3, Bridgewater-Emery 2

MADISON — Colman-Egan stormed back from a two-set deficit to take a five-set win over previously unbeaten Bridgewater-Emery in a Region 4B semifinal Thursday night. Set scores were 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 and 15-12.

Colman-Egan (24-7): Mackenzie Hemmer powered her way to 16 kills, 22 digs and six blocks, as Hailey Larson posted a team-high 20 kills. Ava Mousel put up 25 assists and two aces, and Daniela Lee had 19 digs and four blocks. The Hawks will be seeded fifth in the SoDak 16 against No. 12 Miller on Nov. 9.

Bridgewater-Emery: Julia Weber recorded 26 kills, 19 digs and two aces, as Taylor Schallenkamp chipped in 24 kills and two blocks. Casey Meyer and Kaitlyn Roskens put up 31 and 27 assists, respectively, and Cara Meyer contributed 40 digs. The Huskies’ season comes to a close with a record of 28-1.

Winner 3, Dupree 0

WINNER — Winner swept Dupree at home in a Region 6A semifinal on Thursday night to advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21 and 25-12.

Winner (18-13): Ellie Brozik did a little bit of everything for Winner, finishing with 18 kills, 10 digs, nine assists, five ace serves and one block. Rylee Root had 12 digs and eight aces, as Lexi Klein posted 19 assists. Seeded No. 11, the Warriors will play No. 6 Hill City in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9 at a site to be determined.

Dupree: Individual statistics were not available for Dupree, which ends its season with a record of 6-16.

Freeman 3, Irene-Wakonda 2

FREEMAN — Freeman twice trailed visiting Irene-Wakonda in set count, but rallied to win a five-set Region 5B semifinal Thursday night and advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 19-25, 28-26, 19-25, 25-22 and 18-16.

Freeman (20-9): Kate Miller led the way for Freeman with 23 kills, 28 digs, three ace serves and a pair of blocks, as Ashlin Jacobsen added 17 kills, 33 digs, one ace and two blocks. In addition to Miller and Jacobsen, four more Flyers — Ava Ammann (26), Emily Mendel (26), Cami Fransen (23) and Lily Wipf (20) — had at least 20 digs in the match. Ammann also put up 45 assists. Freeman will face Arlington (29-5) in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9.

Irene-Wakonda: Emma Orr notched 17 kills, 16 digs, 15 assists and one ace, as Nora O’Malley powered her way to 19 kills, eight blocks, six digs and three aces. McKenna Mark put up 21 assists and 26 digs and was one of four Eagles with at least 25 digs, led by 50 by Willa Freeman. Irene-Wakonda’s season comes to a close with a record of 15-13.

Other area scores

Mobridge-Pollock 3, Chamberlain 0 in Mobridge: Mobridge-Pollock proved too much for Chamberlain, taking a Region 6A semifinal in straight sets on Thursday night. Set scores were 25-18, 25-15 and 25-17. The Tigers improved to 24-8 and will be seeded 10th in the SoDak 16 on Nov. 9, where M-P will take on seventh-seeded Hamlin. Chamberlain’s season ends at 9-21.

Parkston 3, MVP 1 in Mount Vernon: Parkston scored a road win over Mount Vernon/Plankinton in a Region 5A semifinal Thursday night to advance to the SoDak 16. Set scores were 25-21, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20. Parkston (20-14) advances to the state-qualifying match on Nov. 9 as the No. 12 seed and will face No. 5 Rapid City Christian for a trip to the Class A state tournament at a site to be determined. Mount Vernon/Plankinton — which was the No. 1 seed in the region — ends the season with a record of 20-7.
