Area high school volleyball roundup: Fighting Cougars upset Cavaliers

TYNDALL -No. 6 McCook Central/Montrose knocked off No. 3 Bon Homme in three sets on Tuesday night in Region 5A volleyball action in Tyndall.

Set scores were 25-20, 26-24 and 25-14.

Danielle Hansen recorded a double-double with 13 kills, 11 digs and three ace serves for the Fighting Cougars. Morgan Koepsell added nine kills, while Nicole Reis tallied 30 assists.

For Bon Homme, Jeni Schmidt picked up 10 kills and two blocks and Alie Adams chipped in 20 assists in the loss.

McCook Central/Montrose (14-12) will continue postseason action as they travel to Wagner on Thursday, while Bon Homme ends its season at 26-7.

Wagner 3, Parkston 0

WAGNER - Wagner picked up its first win in Region 5A play on Tuesday night, defeating Parkston in three sets.

Set scores were 25-12, 25-20 and 25-16.

Jensen Holzbauer recorded nine kills for the Red Raiders. Ali Kuca tallied seven kills and 11 digs, while Jaslynn Bruguier added five ace serves and 10 digs.

For Parkston, Halli Heisinger recorded seven kills and two blocks. Faith Rands chipped in 16 digs, while Sydney Weber picked up 10 assists in the loss.

Wagner (27-5) will continue region play on Thursday as they host McCook Central/Montrose, while Parkston finishes its season at 9-19.

Wessington Springs 3, Iroquois 0

WESSINGTON SPRINGS - In District 6B volleyball action, Wessington Springs defeated Iroquois on Tuesday night in three sets.

Set scores were 25-8, 25-16 and 25-21.

Maddie Gran recorded eight kills for the Spartans, while Whitney Reider added 16 assists. Maddie Neely chipped in five kills for Wessington Springs.

Raysia Culver tallied six kills, three assists and two ace serves for the Chiefs. Allison Bich added five kills and eight assists for Iroquois in the loss.

Wessington Springs continues district play with a 6-20 record, while Iroquois ends its season at 4-21.

Howard 3, Bridgewater-Emery 1

ALEXANDRIA - The Howard Tigers picked up a District 8B first round win over Bridgewater-Emery on Tuesday night in four sets.

Set scores were 21-25, 25-11, 25-17 and 25-16.

Cayla Koepsell led the Tigers with eight kills and eight blocks. Katelyn Kampshoff tallied four kills, three blocks, eight assists, four digs and two ace serves. Citori Rentz picked up two kills, two blocks, 14 assists, three digs and one ace serve.

For Bridgewater-Emery, Kadra Kayser had six kills and 10 digs, while Joslyn Schrank chipped in 23 digs in the loss.

Howard (9-15) will face Hanson on Thursday night in Alexandria, while Bridgewater-Emery concludes its season at 9-15.

Mitchell Christian 3, Canistota 0

ALEXANDRIA - Abbie Reynen's double-double propelled Mitchell Christian over Canistota in three sets on Tuesday night in District 8B play.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-17 and 25-16.

Reynen recorded 15 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Emily Reynen picked up six kills, six digs and eight ace serves. Kelsey Thompson added a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.

For Canistota, Kalli Ortman tallied seven kills and three digs, while Kassidy Engbrecht had 13 assists, four digs and three ace serves.

Mitchell Christian (14-11) will play Ethan on Thursday in Alexandria, while Canistota finishes its season at 6-20.

Scotland 3, Marion 1

MENNO - Fourth-seeded Scotland withstood a late charge from No. 5 seed Marion to win a first round match in District 9B in four sets.

Set scores were 25-29, 25-16, 25-27 and 29-27.

Alex Conrad led the Highlanders with eight aces serves and tacking on 12 assists and seven kills. Elyssa Walloch had 10 kills and 39 digs, while teammate Shannon Fanning had a game-high 45 digs. Taylor Gall had nine kills, four aces and three blocks, while Kayla Rokusek had eight kills in the winning effort.

Marion was led by a 20-dig, 19-assist effort from Renae Kayser. Michele Schoenwald also posted a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. Ashley Engebrecht had 20 digs and six kills.

Scotland (10-18) returns to Menno on Thursday night to take on top-seeded Parker, while the Bears season ends at 6-14.

Menno 3, Freeman 0

MENNO - Menno picked up a District 9B win on its home court on Tuesday night, defeating Freeman in three sets.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-18 and 25-9.

Tara Spencer had a game high nine kills, one assist, one block, seven digs and five ace serves to pace the Wolves. Marissa Buechler chipped in a double-double with 10 assists, 11 digs and two kills. Ashton Vaith added five kills, one block and 17 digs.

For Freeman, Karli Maske had eight kills, one assist and 19 digs, while Ashley Glanzer tallied five kills, one assist and 15 digs in the loss.

Menno (11-12) will continue action on Thursday as they play Freeman Academy, while Freeman ends its season at 0-20.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 3, Corsica-Stickney 0

TRIPP - Kelsey Buchmann led the way for Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Tuesday night in District 11B action. The Nighthawks defeated the Jaguars in the three sets.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-12.

Buchmann recorded seven kills, four blocks and nine ace serves. Erica Koster chipped in a double-double with 16 assists and 18 digs.

For Corsica-Stickney, Brittany Bamberg tallied eight kills, 12 digs, two ace serves and eight ace serves in the loss.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (7-17) will face Platte-Geddes on Thursday in Platte, while Corsica-Stickney finishes its season at 2-21.

Lyman 3, Kadoka Area 0

PRESHO - No. 2 Lyman held off No. 3 Kadoka Area on Tuesday night, defeating the Kougars in three sets in the District 13B semifinals.

Shelby Schindler recorded 12 kills for the Raiders. Ashton Smith added seven kills, four ace serves and two blocks, while Hanna Thiry pitched in 17 assists.

No stats were provided for Kadoka Area.

Lyman (20-10) will host Jones County on Thursday for the district championship, while Kadoka Area ends its season at 12-14.

Chamberlain 3, McLaughlin 0

STEPHEN - Fourteen kills and two blocks from Irene Grassrope helped the Chamberlain Cubs to a Region 6B first round win on Tuesday night over McLaughlin in three sets.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-13 and 25-18.

Willow Kott added nine kills and four blocks, while Alison Swenson had a double-double with 21 digs and 12 assists. Maisey Fees-Spellman had 19 digs and six assists.

No stats were reported for McLaughlin.

Chamberlain (7-20) will continue districts on Thursday as they face Mobridge-Pollock in Stephens at 6 p.m., while McLaughlin ends its season at 12-17.

Gregory 3, Marty Indian 0

GREGORY - Gregory cruised to victory on Tuesday night, defeating Marty Indian in three sets in the District 12B first round game.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-11 and 25-7.

Hannah Juracek led the way for the Gorillas with 11 kills, three ace serves and two blocks. Alexa Hannahs added 24 assists, while Maddie Eklund tallied 14 digs.

No stats were provided for Marty Indian.

Gregory (5-22) will visit Colome on Thursday, while Marty Indian finishes its season at 2-16.
