Area high school basketball: Canistota tops Freeman 65-38

FREEMAN -- Canistota picked up its second win of the season Thursday night, defeating Freeman 65-38 thanks to Mason Decker and Shay Jolley, who had 18 points apiece. Canistota shot 27-of-52 from the floor, 6-of-12 from free throw line and recorded 17 assists and 37 rebounds.

Freeman was led offensively by Brennan Schmidt, who had 19 points and six rebounds. The Flyers were 14-of-49 from the field, 10-of-16 from the free throw line and pulled in 30 rebounds and dished out four assists.

Canistota (2-0) takes on Hitchcock-Tulare on Dec. 29 in Parkston, while Freeman (1-1) hosts Bon Homme on Jan. 3.

Gregory 81, Colome 50

GREGORY -- Gregory had five players score in double figures in an 81-50 win over Colome on Thursday.


Jayd VanDerWerff had 14 points, Gavin Thomas added 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double and Damon Eagle Star had 12 points in the win. Cody Kafka tallied 11 points and Sean Kafka had 11 points. The Gorillas were 34-of-62 from the floor and 6-of-10 from the free throw line. Gregory outrebounded Colome 35-20.

Colome's Reed Harter had a game-high 25 points and Holden Thieman added 17 points and nine rebounds. The Cowboys were 20-of-41 from the field and 4-of-10 from the line.

Colome won the JV game 26-17.

CORSICA -- Mount Vernon/Plankinton earned a 67-44 win over Corsica/Stickney in a high school boys basketball game on Thursday in Corsica.


Cody Renken scored 22 points for the Titans, while Hayden Schmidt and Tate Deinert each chipped in with 12 points. Deinert dished out five assists in the win.

Corsica/Stickney was led by Austin Tilton and Clayton Menning with each scoring seven points.

The Titans shot 47 percent from the field while the Corsica/Stickney shot 38 percent.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-1) plays at Gregory on Dec. 30, while Corsica/Stickney (1-2) plays at Wessington Springs on Monday.

ALEXANDRIA -- Hanson topped Menno 50-28 in a high school boys basketball game in Alexandria on Thursday.


Taylor Nichols led Hanson with 28 points and five rebounds. Jordan Marquardt added nine points while Aaron Wenande had five assists. The Beavers made 21-of-47 field goals,10-of-17 from the free throw line, 25 rebounds and five turnovers.

Menno's Dustin Lehr recorded 15 points and eight rebounds. Menno went 12-of-30 from the field, 1-of-8 behind the free throw line, had 24 rebounds and committed 16 turnovers.

Menno (1-1) play Iroquois on Monday at the Corn Palace. Hanson (2-0) plays Lake Preston on Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

Platte-Geddes 54, Burke/South Central 41

BURKE -- Carter Dykstra scored 19 points as the Platte-Geddes Black Panthers beat Burke/South Central 54-41 in high school boys basketball action on Thursday in Burke.

Coby Johnson added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Brady Peterson had six rebounds.


Platte-Geddes made 26-of-59 field goals for 44 percent.

Leading Burke/South Central was Dell Drey, who recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Zach Sebern recorded 13 points and one rebound, while Tyson Vogt had 10 points and three rebounds. Burke/South Central went 10-of-45 for 22 percent from the field. Burke/South Central (1-1) travel to Stuart, Neb. on Saturday. Platte-Geddes (2-0) plays Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Dec. 30 in Chamberlain.

ARMOUR -- The Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Blackhawks defeated the Tripp-Delmont/Armour Nighthawks 74-47 in a high school boys basketball game on Thursday in Armour.

Dillon Moore recorded 21 points, six rebounds and seven steals for the Blackhawks. Josh Feiner recorded 13 points and one rebound. Sanborn Central/Woonsocket made 30-of-63 field goals, 11-of-14 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds and committed 13 turnovers.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour was led by Gunnar Dally with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Tanner Carta had nine points. The Nighthawks made 17-of-36 field goals, 10-of-17 free throw percentage and 25 rebounds.


Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (2-0) goes head-to-head with Hitchcock-Tulare on Jan. 3 in Hitchcock. Tripp-Delmont/Armour (0-3) plays a doubleheader against Bridgewater/Emery on Saturday in Armour.

ETHAN -- Hanner Tilberg scored 18 points and had five assists as Ethan downed Dakota Christian 57-47 in a high school boys basketball game on Thursday in Ethan.

Camden Myers had a double-double for the Rustlers with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Ethan shot 57 percent from the field, while Dakota Christian shot 33 percent in the loss.

Michael Maas led the Cadets with 13 points and seven rebounds, while Chase Pheifer added 12 points.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Hitchcock-Tulare picked up a 54-25 victory over Wessington Springs on the road Thursday night.

The Patriots were led by Landon Gatzke's 18 points.

Wessington Springs was led by Nicolas Paulson, who had 11 points. Wessington Springs shot 9-of-55 from the floor, while Hitchcock-Tulare made 17 of 59 field goals.

Wessington Springs (0-1) takes on Corsica/Stickney on Monday in Wessington Springs, while Hitchcock-Tulare (1-0) faces Langford Area on Saturday at home.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Sheyanne Brodkorb scored a game-high 24 points in the Wessington Springs girls basketball team's 51-39 victory over Hitchcock-Tulare on Thursday night.

She added six steals, while Shyanne Kopfmann grabbed 15 rebounds for the Spartans, who were 19-of-43 from the floor, 11-of-22 from the line and had 31 rebounds and 12 turnovers.

Shaylyn Steinheuser had 14 points for the Patriots, who were 17-of-49 from the field, 4-of-10 from the line and had 25 rebounds and 22 turnovers.

The Spartans (2-1) host Corsica/Stickney on Monday, while the Patriots (0-2) play Gayville-Volin on Dec. 31 in Brookings.

CORSICA -- The Mount Vernon/Plankinton girls basketball team had three players in double-digit scoring figures in a 60-23 win over Corsica/Stickney on Thursday.

Makaela Karst led the Titans with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Megan Bultsma recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Payleen O'Day had 13 points and Ivy Haines added nine rebounds for the Titans, who were 20-of-47 from the floor and 14-of-21 from the line.

Hope Menning tallied a team-high 15 points and four rebounds for the Jaguars, who were 8-of-30 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line.

MVP (3-0) plays Groton Area on Dec. 27 in Parkston, while Corsica/Stickney (2-2) plays at Wessington Springs on Monday.

Scotland 53, Bon Homme 43

TYNDALL -- The Scotland girls basketball team improved to 2-0 Thursday after beating Bon Homme 53-43.

Carley Skorepa had 20 points and eight rebounds, and Hannah Mogck added nine points and 14 rebounds for Scotland. The Highlanders were 17-of-42 from the field, 2-of-13 from behind the arc and 15-of-21 from the line, while committing 17 turnovers.

Bailey Kortan had 18 points, Sierra Mesman added 11 points and four steals and Jeni Schmidt had seven rebounds in the loss. The Cavaliers were 17-of-55 from the field, 4-of-12 from three-point range and 5-of-6 from the line. Bon Homme won the rebounding battle 31-30 and had 14 turnovers.

Scotland hosts Ethan on Saturday, while Bon Homme (1-2) plays Irene-Wakonda on Monday in Wakonda.

ETHAN -- The Ethan Rustlers forced 22 Dakota Christian turnovers en route to a 53-21 win Thursday in high school girls basketball action.

Kacey Bartscher scored 20 points, Darbi Gustafson added 11 points and Rachel Hawkins recorded seven points and six steals for the Rustlers. Ethan made 18 of 38 field goals and 12 of 25 free throws, while holding the Cadets to 30 percent shooting from the field.

Dakota Christian's Brooklyn Vander Pol led the Cadets with seven points and six rebounds.

Ethan (2-0) plays Scotland on Saturday in Scotland. Dakota Christian (2-1) plays at Wagner on Saturday.

Selland had a double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Tayla Weber added 14 points, while Kayla Olson had 11 points. The Blackhawks were 24-of-25 from the field, 6-of-14 from the line and had 44 rebounds.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour was led by Mariah Plecity with 10 points, while Jessica Sandau had 14 rebounds. The Nighthawks were 9-of-47 from the fioor, 10-of-22 from the free throw line and had 37 rebounds.

Amanda Reiff added seven points, while Heidi Cap and Kacie Mudder each grabbed six rebounds. Avon shot 29 percent from the field, 10 percent from behind the arc and 34 percent from the line.

HCC was led by Alli Walter with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

ALEXANDRIA -- Sarah Kayser had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Hanson girls basketball team defeated Menno 52-22 on Thursday.

Katlyn Schroeder scored 11 points and Hailey Doyle added five assists for the Beavers, who shot 42 percent from the floor, 50 percent from the line and had 28 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

Menno's Abby Herrboldt had five points and Tara Spencer tallied four points and six rebounds. The Wolves shot 24 percent from the field, 67 percent from the line and recorded 21 rebounds and 33 turnovers.

Hanson (3-1) won the JV game and plays Parkston in the Sanford Pentagon Classic on Saturday in Sioux Falls. Menno (0-4) plays Iroquois on Monday in Mitchell.

Kelsey Bertram had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Tawny Sherman tallied 10 points in the win. The Warriors were 23-of-59 from the field, 9-of-15 from the line and had 23 turnovers and 24 rebounds.

Lexie Fernau recorded a team-high 10 points, while Sierra Votaw added 10 rebounds for the Cougars, who were 12-of-45 from the field, 7-of-13 from the free throw line and had 32 turnovers and 24 rebounds.
