Area football roundup: BEE blanks Golddiggers in first-round rout

BRIDGEWATER -- Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan continued strong regular season play into the first round of the Class 11B playoffs Thursday night, blanking visiting Lead-Deadwood 53-0 in an opening-round game.

Seeded No. 2 in the Class 11B field, the Seahawks rushed for 316 yards on 39 carries and had a pair of 100-yard rushers run up big days. Bodie Burnham had three rushing touchdowns from 5, 16 and 25 yards out to compile 178 yards on 11 carries. Koby Kayser had 102 yards on 11 carries, including two touchdowns from 14 and 19 yards out, respectively. Kaden Klumb and Clay Hohn each added 1-yard touchdown runs. Brandon Jansen had six tackles on defense for BEE, which had 353 total yards. The win was the Seahawks’ 21st consecutive victory.

Lead-Deadwood was held to 49 yards of total offense, including 46 yards on the ground. Charlie Hanel had nine tackles to lead the Golddiggers.

BEE (9-0) will host a Class 11B quarterfinal game on Oct. 29 in Bridgewater against Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central or Sisseton. The Golddiggers wrap up the season at 2-6.

Hanson 34, Parkston 22

ALEXANDRIA -- Hanson staved off Parkston’s comeback to earn a win in the Class 9AA playoffs on Thursday.

Hadley Wallace gained 91 yards on 17 carries for the Beavers, while Jackson Jarding chipped in 55 rushing yards. Kade Waldera completed 4 of 8 passes for 65 yards in the win. Jarding and Price both intercepted a pass on defense. Brock Tuttle added a team-high 10 tackles and Waldera added nine tackles.

For Parkston, Brayden Jervik threw for 95 passing yards and had nine tackles. Landon Sudbeck and Cole Prunty finished with seven and six tackles, respectively.

Hanson (7-2) advances to the Class 9AA quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Parkston ends the season at 4-3.

Winner 40, Garretson 0

WINNER — The Winner Warriors did all of their damage in the first half, as it scored 24 points in the first quarter and chipped in 16 points in the second frame to top Garretson in the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday.

Winner rushed for 268 of its 363 yards, as Sam Kruger’s 85-yard, two-touchdown performance paved the way. Evan Farner chipped in 56 yards and a score, while Brady Fritz completed 4 of 6 passes for 95 yards. Kaden Keiser reeled in a pair of catches for 70 yards. In defense, Kruger and Preston Norrid led the Warriors with six tackles. Riley Orel intercepted a pass in the win.

Dominic Abraham rushed for 45 yards on 14 attempts for Garretson. Cooper Long caught five passes for 26 yards and added a team-high seven tackles.

Winner (8-0) will host McCook Central/Montrose on Oct. 29 in the Class 11B quarterfinals. Garretson’s season ends at 2-7.

MCM 22, Stanley County 14

FORT PIERRE -- A 16-point third quarter pushed McCook Central/Montrose past Stanley County in the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday.

Bobby Koepsell caught a 14-yard touchdown from Gavin Gordon and Avery Feterl rushed for a 1-yard score to highlight the high-scoring quarter. Gordon threw for 96 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, including two touchdown tosses to Feterl. Jacobi Krouse paced the MCM rushing attack with 105 yards on 24 carries. Will Cleveland and Feterl both had seven tackles, while Feterl and Cody Miles each added an interception in the win.

Stanley County finished with 152 passing yards and 134 rushing yards. Gavin Irving caught a 360yard touchdown in the loss. Sydney Tubbs led the team with five tackles.

McCook Central/Montrose (5-3) travels to Winner on Oct. 29 in the Class 11B quarterfinals. Stanley County finishes the season 5-3.

Canistota/Freeman 48, Chester Area 14

FREEMAN -- Canistota/Freeman scored 16 points in each of the first three quarters to power it to a Class 9A playoff win on Thursday over Chester Area.

Tyce Ortman threw for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while gaining 128 yards and scoring twice more on the ground for the Pride. He connected with Collin Helma for a 63-yard touchdown and Isiah Robertson for a 43-yard score. Robertson also rushed for a touchdown during his 82-yard game. Blake Anderson had seven tackles, while Robertson had an interception.

Stratton Eppard completed 17 of 32 passes for 166 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for Chester Area. He also rushed for 69 yards on 21 attempts. Jovi Wolf caught a pair of touchdown passes.

Canistota/Freeman (8-1) advances to the Class 9A quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Chester Area ends the season 6-3.

Platte-Geddes 36, Bon Homme 0

PLATTE -- Kelby VanDerWerff’s three passing touchdowns guided Platte-Geddes to a 36-point win over Bon Homme in the Class 9AA playoffs on Thursday.

VanDerWerff completed 5 of 9 passes for 99 yards and three scores. He threw touchdowns to Nate Whalen, Jalen Severson and Grayson Hanson, who paced Platte-Geddes’ rushing attack with 92 yards and two scores on six carries. Jackson Neuman gained 91 yards on 12 attempts in the win. Myles Kott had a team-high eight tackles and Neuman chipped in seven tackles. Hanson intercepted a pass.

Isaac Crownover gained a team-high 89 yards on the ground for the Cavaliers. He also caught three passes for 45 yards and had 10 tackles on defense. Logan Winckler added 10 tackles, as well.

Platte-Geddes (9-0) will host a Class 9AA quarterfinal game on Oct. 29. Bon Homme’s season ends at 2-6.

Howard 20, De Smet 0

HOWARD -- Howard blanked De Smet and advanced in the Class 9A football playoffs on Thursday.

Lane Miller paced the Tigers with 96 rushing yards on seven carries and scored one touchdown. Riley Genzlinger finished with 74 rushing yards on 16 carries, while John Callies scored a pair of rushing touchdowns. Tisyn Spader added 80 rushing yards. Defensively, Ty Beyer and Jaxon Kampshoff had 10 tackles apiece.

De Smet’s Colt Wilkinson finished with 206 passing yards, while Kalen Garry added 168 rushing yards on 11 carries. Garry also hauled in eight receptions for 41 yards.

Howard (8-0) advances to the Class 9A quarterfinals on Oct. 29. De Smet finishes the season at 6-3.

Scotland 40, Irene-Wakonda 14

SCOTLAND -- Scotland overcame four turnovers and knocked off Irene-Wakonda in the Class 9B playoffs on Thursday.

Turner Nicholson led the Highlanders with 126 rushing yards on 25 carries and one touchdown. Lucas Dennis also had a rushing touchdown for Scotland, which had 149 rushing yards and zero passing yards. Scotland’s Stephen Johnson and Nick Harrington both scored on interception returns. Logan Sayler added an 87-yard kickoff return for a score. Defensively, Kalen Maruska had 6.5 tackles and one sack.

Irene-Wakonda rolled up 249 total yards, including 149 through the air. The Eagles, however, committed three turnovers. Miles Pollman and Connor Libby each had a touchdown run. Christian Anderson recorded 8.5 tackles.

Scotland (5-3) advances to the Class 9B quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Irene-Wakonda finishes the season at 2-7.

Castlewood 32, Gregory 14

GREGORY -- Castlewood eliminated Gregory from the Class 9A playoffs on Thursday.

Carson Kirwan powered the victory with 227 rushing yards on 41 carries and two touchdowns. Tristan Nielsen added 64 passing yards and a touchdown through the air. The Warriors racked up 260 rushing yards on 55 carries.

Gregory finished with 138 rushing yards, with Coy Determan accounting for 105 passing yards. Determan threw a 20-yard touchdown reception to Kade Stukel. Jordan Vosika added a two-yard touchdown run for Gregory.

Castlewood (5-4) will play in the Class 9A quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Gregory wraps up the season at 5-4.

Sioux Valley 56, Chamberlain 6

VOLGA -- Jaxton Schiller became Sioux Valley’s all-time leading scorer during its win over Chamberlain in the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday. Schiller has 284 points in his career, passing 2017 graduate Daymien Lucas.

Schiller had five touchdowns, including two receiving touchdowns, a kickoff return touchdown, a punt return touchdown and rushing score. He rushed for 61 yards and caught six passes for 137 yards in the win. Parker Puetz completed all eight of his passes for 158 yards. Raven Olson led the team with 85 rushing yards. Ashton Bultje chipped in 10 tackles.

Hayden Evans caught two passes for 41 yards for the Cubs. Trey Neilan rushed for 53 yards on 10 carries. Garrett Ristau had nine tackles in the loss.

Sioux Valley (8-1) plays Elk Point-Jefferson in the Class 11B quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Chamberlain drops to 2-7 to end the season.

Other area games

Elk-Point Jefferson 27, Mount Vernon/Plankinton 12, in Elk Point: Elk-Point Jefferson notched a win in the first round of the Class 11B playoffs on Thursday over Mount Vernon/Plankinton. No. 5-seed Elk Point-Jefferson (6-3) travels to fourth-seeded Sioux Valley on Oct. 29 for the Class 11B quarterfinals. Mount Vernon/Plankinton finishes the season 3-4.

Corsica-Stickney advances in 9A

Corsica-Stickney advanced to the Class 9A quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon without taking the field, as Estelline/Hendricks forfeited their matchup in Corsica. No explanation for the forfeit was announced by the Redhawks, who had joined the playoff bracket on Wednesday when Avon announced it couldn’t play due to COVID-19.

The Jaguars (5-4) will await their quarterfinal opponent, with the game to be played on Oct. 29
