Area basketball roundup: MVP girls take down Sanborn Central/Woonsocket to improve to 2-1

WOONSOCKET — After a convincing 34-19 first half, the Titans were able to seal the deal against the Blackhawks winning 62-43.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-1): Emilee Fox led all scorers with 33 points and had four steals. Reagan Rus scored 10 points while Maria Baker scored nine points. Kyia Schmidt tallied seven rebounds in the victory.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (2-2): Liz Boschee scored 14 points and Trista White added eight points in effort. Trinity Boschee contributed seven points, six rebounds, and three assists. Brooke Doering and Taya Moody each had five points and three assists respectively.

Wagner 60, Menno 16

MENNO — Wagner outscored Menno 38-6 in the first half to cruise to its third victory of the season on Tuesday.

Wagner (3-0): Macy Koupal and Eve Zephier each notched 10 points while Koupal added five rebounds and Zephier added five steals. Avari Bruguier and Emma Yost both scored nine points while Yost snatched nine rebounds. The Red Raiders travel to Sioux Falls Christian on Jan. 4.


Menno (1-3): Paityn Huber had nine points and three rebounds while Bridget Vaith had four points and six rebounds. Layne Schmidt chipped in with three rebounds and three blocks. The Wolves play Sully Buttes in Parkston during the Parkston Classic.

Chamberlain 52, KWL 44

KIMBALL — Chamberlain took down Kimball/White Lake on Tuesday night to earn its second win of the season.

Chamberlain (2-3): Mya Knippling had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Jayna Handel had 12 points. Jayd Chmela added nine points for the Cubs. Chamberlain plays Canton during the Pentagon Classic at the Sanford Pentagon.

Kimball/White Lake (1-3): Harley Namanny led all scorers with 22 points and six rebounds. Ryann Nielsen added eight points and six rebounds while Kate Havlik added nine points. The Wildkats. KWL travels to Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Jan. 4.

TDA 44, FAM 30

TRIPP — Tripp-Delmont/Armour held Freeman Academy/Marion to eight points in the first half to earn its first win of the season on Tuesday.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (1-3): Megan Reiner notched 17 points, six rebounds and four steals while Raevin Castle scored 14 points. Emma Faller and Hannah Stemick both added seven rebounds and Faller added four steals. The Nighthawks host Kimball/White Lake on Jan. 22.

Freeman Academy/Marion (2-3): Jada Koerner led all scorers with 22 points. The Bearcats host Oldham-Ramona/Rutland on Jan. 4.

Scotland 38, Burke 35

SCOTLAND — Scotland squeaked past Burke on Tuesday to earn its third win of the season.


Scotland (3-2): Martina DeBoer scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds while Delanie Van Driel scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Audrey Sayler and Jenna Vitek each had six points and Sayler snatched eight rebounds.

Burke (0-4): Kailee Frank led the Cougars with nine points and six rebounds while Bridget Bartling had nine points. Adisyn Indahl chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds. Burke plays Jones County on Dec. 30.

Miller 38, Wessington Springs 30

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Wessington Springs had 25 turnovers in a loss to Miller during a girls basketball game on Tuesday.

Miller (3-0): Morgan Kolda scored 14 points and knocked down two 3-pointers in the win. Jaden Werdel had nine points and six rebounds while Tricia Lammers had eight points and five rebounds. The Rustlers travel to Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Dec. 28.

Wessington Springs (2-4): Avery Orth had 13 points and snatched 14 rebounds. Kirstie Munsen added 10 points and five rebounds while Carissa Scheel added six points and six rebounds. The Spartans host Highmore-Harrold on Dec. 29.

Boys basketball

MVP 63, SCW 29

WOONSOCKET — Mount Vernon/Plankinton shot 48% from the field and held Sanborn Central/Woonsocket to 28% shooting to earn a road win in boys basketball action on Tuesday night.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-1): Reed Rus led all scorers with 19 points to go with five assists, while Jordan Stoltz added 15 points and six rebounds. Zach Baker finished with 17 points and four steals for the Titans, who host Miller on Dec. 28.

Sanborn Central/Woonsocket (1-3): Tryce Slykhuis scored nine points and Bryce Larson chipped in seven points. Jeff Boschee had four rebounds for the Blackhawks, who face off with Faulkton Area in the Huron Holiday Classic on Dec. 30.


Canistota 50, Bridgewater-Emery 36

EMERY — Canistota continued its solid start to the season with a road victory in boys basketball on Tuesday.

Canistota (2-0): Isiah Robertson had 23 points, 10 rebounds and four steals and Tye Merrill had 13 points for the Hawks, who are back in action against Gregory at the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 28.

Bridgewater-Emery (2-2): Aguer Van Sickle had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Sutton Arend had nine points and nine rebounds. The Huskies will play Waubay/Summit on Dec. 28 at the Hoop City Classic.

Chester Area 53, MCM 44

CHESTER — Chester Area defeated MCM in a close game on Tuesday.

Chester Area (2-3): Ashton Olivier tallied 15 points and three steals, while Stratton Eppard had 12 points and five assists. Brock Wages and Ryan Benson each scored eight points respectively. The Flyers travel to Dell Rapids St. Mary on Dec. 28.

McCook Central/Montrose (3-2): Micah VanRuler led the team with 14 points and 13 rebounds. MCM plays Corsica-Stickney at Parkston during the Parkston Classic.

Wagner 69, Menno 31

MENNO — Wagner posted a great offensive display to pick up its first win against Menno on Tuesday night.

Wagner (1-2): Dustin Honomichl scored a game-high 23 points while Toby Zephier added nine points. Wagner heads to Bon Homme on Jan. 7.

Menno (0-4): Tyler Massey recorded eight points as well as four rebounds. Blake Rames had eight points and seven rebounds. Menno will travel to Howard on Jan. 4

FAM 68, TDA 41

TRIPP — Freeman Academy/Marion ran out to a 35-18 halftime lead and maintained the advantage throughout the second half on the way to a boys basketball win on Tuesday night.

Freeman Academy/Marion (3-0): Connor Epp scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as Quincy Blue added 18 points and nine rebounds. Thalen Schroeder had 14 points for the Bearcats, who take on Howard at the Hoop City Classic on Dec. 29.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour (1-2): Carson Koehn led TDA with 10 points and seven rebounds. Kandon Bialas, Mason Reiner and Riley Spaans each added six points for the Nighthawks, who host Kimball/White Lake on Jan. 4.

Wessington Springs 59, Miller 45

WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Wessington Springs outscored Miller 23-11 in the final eight minutes to pull away and win a boys basketball game at home on Tuesday night.

Wessington Springs (3-1): Mason Schelske posted a 35-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Spartans in both categories, adding four assists, two steals and one block. Jack Neely added six points, five rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes of action. Wessington Springs hosts Highmore-Harrold on Dec. 29.

Miller (0-4): Alex Schumacher notched 19 points, while Trevor Werdel chipped in 10 points and five rebounds. The Rustlers are at Mount Vernon/Plankinton on Dec. 28.
