Area basketball roundup: McCook Central/Montrose tops Howard

SALEM -- Three players combined for 48 points to power Class A No. 5 McCook Central/Montrose to a 59-38 girls basketball win over Howard on Friday.

McCook Central/Montrose (3-0): Madisen Koepsell led MCM with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Jacy Pulse netted 15 points and collected eight rebounds. Ashtyn Wobig added 12 points for the Fighting Cougars, who used a 21-6 second quarter to pull away. MCM finished with 44 rebounds. The Fighting Cougars travel to Dell Rapids on Jan. 7.

Howard (1-1): Hilary Albrecht finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Emma Rudebusch put in 12 points on four 3-pointers and Kenedy Koepsell added seven points. The Tigers travel to Freeman on Jan. 3.

Bridgewater-Emery 73, Canistota 52

CANISTOTA -- Four players scored in double figures to pace Bridgewater-Emery to a girls basketball win over Canistota on Friday.

Bridgewater-Emery (2-1): Julia Weber led the way with 25 points, five rebounds and five steals. Kennedee Weber finished with 13 points. Kerrigan Schultz recorded 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Chloe Schmitt added 11 points and seven boards. The Huskies play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Jan. 7 in Emery.

Canistota (0-2): Skylar Bultje paced the Hawks with 10 points and five rebounds. Alexia Tieszen and Hannah Parry both scored nine points apiece. Tieszen added six rebounds. The Hawks play Redfield in the Parkston Classic on Dec. 28.

Lyman 42, Rapid City Christian 37

PRESHO -- Maleighya Estes accounted for half of Lyman’s points as the Raiders stayed unbeaten with a win over Rapid City Christian.

Lyman (4-0): Estes scored a game-high 21 points, while Kacie Wagner added eight points and 19 rebounds. The Raiders play Bennett County Saturday in Martin.

Rapid City Christian (1-2): Olivia Kieffer had 15 points. The Comets play Warner in the Big Bo Classic on Dec. 28 in Wolsey.


Parkston 62, Chamberlain 35

CHAMBERLAIN -- Parkston led Chamberlain 17-2 at the end of the first quarter en route to its second win of the season.

Parkston (2-0): Sydney Wickersham had 14 points and Emma Yost added 13 points. The Trojans play Warner in the Parkston Classic on Dec. 30.

Chamberlain (0-1): Hannah Anderson had 11 points in defeat. The Cubs play Kimball/White Lake Saturday in Kimball.

Gregory 40, Platte-Geddes 26

PLATTE -- Gregory picked up its first win of the season with a victory over Platte-Geddes in girls basketball action on Friday.

Gregory (1-1): Brooklyn VanDerWerff finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Sydney Svatos grabbed a team-best 15 boards. Jessy Jo VanDerWerff scored eight points and added seven steals. The Gorillas play North Central (Neb.) Saturday in Springview, Nebraska.

Platte-Geddes (0-3): Karly VanDerWerff finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Cadence Van Zee recorded seven points, eight rebounds and two assists. The Black Panthers play Freeman Saturday in Platte.


West Central 63, Wagner 27

WAGNER -- Class A No. 4 West Central took a 15-3 lead on Wagner at the end of the first quarter and never looked back to secure the road win.

West Central (2-0): Cassidy Siemonsma scored a game-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Rylee Halderman also chipped in 10 points. The Trojans play Deuel in the Swiftel Classic on Dec. 30 in Brookings.

Wagner (0-3): Macy Koupal had nine points and Abby Brunsing added eight points. The Red Raiders play Sioux Falls Christian on Jan. 4 in Sioux Falls.

Bon Homme 61, Scotland 43

TYNDALL -- Bon Homme topped Scotland on Friday in boys basketball action.

Bon Homme (1-1): Nate Scieszinski added 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. Nate Hall scored 15 points. Riley Rothschadl recorded eight points, five rebounds and two assists. Connor Peters recorded six points, two assists and two steals. The Cavaliers play McCook Central/Montrose Saturday in Salem.

Scotland (1-2): Ty Mogck and Keenan Souhrada each scored 11 points. Mason Dennis chipped in eight points. The Highlanders host Andes Central/Dakota Christian Saturday.

Chamberlain 68, Parkston 49

CHAMBERLAIN -- Chamberlain outscored Parkston 37-20 in the second half to pull away for its first win of the season on Friday.

Chamberlain (1-2): Drayton Priebe scored 26 points and dished out six assists, while Kolby Hyland had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Sellyck McManus also had 12 points and 10 rebounds. The Cubs host Stanley County Saturday.

Parkston (2-1): Nathan Boettcher and Braden Bruening scored 14 points apiece and Rylan Leischner added 11 points. The Trojans host Warner in the Parkston Classic on Dec. 28.

SALEM -- Howard took a double-digit lead into halftime to secure a road win against McCook Central/Montrose on Friday.

Howard (3-0): Tisyn Spader scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Sam Aslesen added 14 points. The Tigers play White River in the Hoop City Classic on Friday at the Corn Palace.

McCook Central/Montrose (0-3): Isaac McCormick had 14 points and Collin Kolbeck had 12 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Koltan Lindstrom also added 10 points and seven rebounds. The Fighting Cougars host Bon Homme Saturday in Salem.

WAGNER -- West Central used a 23-point third quarter to take down Wagner in boys basketball action on Friday.

West Central (2-2): Jaxon Skinner scored a team-high 18 points to go with 17 rebounds and a pair of steals. Hunter Hagerty and Ayden Nothdurft finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Derek Eidsness grabbed seven rebounds. The Trojans play Crow Creek on Jan. 4 at the Corn Palace.

Wagner (1-2): Nolan Carda scored 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Red Raiders. Toby Zephier finished with six points and nine boards. Simon Freier finished with eight points. The Red Raiders play Bon Homme on Jan. 10 in Tyndall.

Miller (0-3): Tyler Schumacher scored 17 points. Trevor Werdel added eight points. The Rustlers play Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in the Huron Classic on Dec. 30.

FREEMAN -- Mount Vernon/Plankinton cruised past Freeman on Friday in boys basketball action.

Mount Vernon/Plankinton (2-1): Kolby Kayser scored 25 points to pace the Titans. Reed Rus added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Nathan Hohn grabbed seven rebounds, Rylee Deinert dished out five assists and Brady Anderson scored 12 points. The Titans play Dakota Valley in the Parkston Classic Dec. 30.

Freeman (0-4): Bradey Kaufman and Micah Swensen each scored 11 points. Swensen also grabbed six rebounds. Kaufman finished with four rebounds and Tryg Aanenson added four assists. The Flyers host Howard on Jan. 3.
