Amateur baseball roundup: Platte upsets Winner in District 5B tournament

CORSICA -- Platte pulled an upset over No. 2 seed Winner/Colome, 8-1, in the District 5B tournament on Sunday.

The Killer Tomatoes advanced to the state tournament with the win and will play Alexandria in the district championship on Friday.

Platte posted 11 hits, while Hunter Hewitt and Grant Lang both smacking home runs. Hewitt belted a three-run homer, while Lang hit a solo homer. Michael Buitenbos and Hayden Kuiper both finished with three hits. Ryan Allen, Tait Sibbel and Derek Soukup each had a hit.

Kuiper earned the win. He scattered six hits, allowed one earned run and struck out two batters in the complete-game performance. He pitched seven scoreless innings before Derek Graesser put Winner/Colome on the board with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

He finished with two of the team’s six hits. Reed Harter, Chandler Bakley, Austin Calhoon and Lakin Neugebauer each had a hit. Connor Hopkins started the first seven innings. He posted seven strikeouts, allowed six hits and three earned runs.


Winner/Colome plays Dimock/Emery on Thursday.

Alexandria 13, Parkston 5

CORSICA -- Alexandria secured another berth in the state tournament with a win over Parkston in the District 5B tournament on Sunday.

The Angels racked up 16 hits, while the Mudcats posted 12 hits in the slugfest. Alexandria’s Tyson Gau powered Alexandria with two hits and a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Cole Wenande, John Greicar, Pierce Smith, Jed Schmidt and Jerrod Zens each had two hits. Peyton Smith, Jordan Gau, Chris Marek and Michael Schoettmer each had a hit. Zens and Schoettmer each drove in two runs.

Tyson Gau picked up the win. He scattered 11 hits, allowed two runs and struck out five batters in seven innings.

For Parkston, Zach Uttecht finished 3 of 4. Jeff Harris and Pat Harris each had two hits. Spencer Freudenthal, Spencer Lucas, Dan Bonte, Jared Donahue and Dillon Stadlman each had a hit. Brady Nolz took the loss. He allowed 13 hits, nine earned runs and struck out six batters in 4 2/3 innings.

Alexandria plays Platte on Friday in District 5B title game. Parkston plays the Corsica/Stickney vs. Mount Vernon winner on Thursday.

Plankinton 5, South Central 4

CHAMBERLAIN -- Plankinton qualified for the state amateur tournament with win over South Central in the District 3B tournament on Sunday.


Josh Geppert drove in Alex Loes for the walk-off single. Cole Knippling led the Bankers with three hits, while Loes finished with two hits. Chris Hill added a hit.

Travis Gant finished with 12 strikeouts for Bankers, while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

For South Central, Paul Taggart finished with three hits. Jaden Frank, Christian Schweigert, Aaron Vomacka and Brandon McKnight each had a hit. Blake Boes took the loss. He gave up two hits, three runs and struck out 11 batters in six innings.

Plankinton plays Four Corners or Kimball/White Lake in the district championship on Thursday. South Central plays Four Corners or Kimball/White Lake on Tuesday.
